The next day, the five of us went outside and hung out in the Wolf Fruit clearing while studying. We were teaching Calli different tips and tricks for studying. After a bit, we finished studying, but stayed outside. Naomi and Harlow moved to the side, talking in hushed tones. Brazen and Calli raced each other through the treetops, while I climbed the tree I had been tied to on the day I’d met Shadow. Speaking of Shadow, I heard a rustling in the tree next to me. I looked over, and met Shadow’s eyes. “Hi,” I said. “Hi,” she replied. I turned my eyes down to my friends. “How are you?” I eventually asked. She shrugged. “As good as one can be after almost dying.” I laughed shakily. “I’ve been through that, too.” She nodded, quiet. “I know. I was there.” Awkward silence. “How’s Ren?” I asked. “He’s been a little… closed off lately. He’s writing to someone, and outside in the woods pretty often.” “Have you talked to him?” She shook her head. “No. But I’ll probably do that tonight.” I nodded. I then asked a question that had been on my mind for a while. “Are you ever going to come to school?” She thought about it. “I want to. But with the hospital bills for my mom, and my grandmother having to support Ren now, we don’t have the money for the supplies.” I nodded. I understood. A few of the families at my home sent their kids to the village school instead of Welsburry, because that was less expensive. Eventually, Shadow returned home and the rest of us went back inside. I observed now that Harlow had been a lot quieter lately. Sure, she was shy, but she’d started to come out of her shell. I wondered what had halted the process. After dinner, we went inside our dorms, and got ready to sleep.
