Instructions

Quinby sat on the dilapated brick wall, watching the fireworks fly. They weren't meant for the likes of them, obviously. But they still saw them. And heard them. You could feel the excited energy of the bright color as it exploded into blue and red sparkles, filling the sky. The young cat rubbed at their unique purple eye, which marked them as... well, as someone with Mulbers Syndrome. Starting with one eye, it spread to the rest of the body, until the patient completely lost their mind. Quinby let their arm fall back and sighed. They didn't have a long time left, they knew. So why couldn't they have a nice life with what time they had left? Not many would hire or house a Mulbers patient. Not even their family. So when Quinby was six years old, and started showing symptoms, they were thrown out. Even Xandi, their favorite sister, accepted it. They lived on the streets for a time, until at eight was offered a job in one of the few factories that didn't use machines and robots to make its washing machines and dryers. They did use machines, but humans and animals and other citizens of Eryvine City toiled on them. Conditions were hard. Quinby soon regretted their decision, and if it weren't for the food and shelter provided they'd have left. Instead, they stayed, for three years, when they were fired. The machines were large, noisy and dangerous. Easy to lose a hand, or a paw, or an appendage. Just as they did. The paw, bandaged hastily, became infected and had to be amputated. Because they were incapable of working properly, they were thrown out. Again homeless, at eleven. Quinby lived on the streets, again, for years. And now they were here. Content, peaceful, despite the sorrow in the city. Happy. Smiling softly, they checked their tail, sighing when it revealed the purple tinge they were becoming all too familiar with. The Syndrome was taking hold. They looked back up at the sky filled with light. One of the fireworks exploded, and the atmosphere was blinded with dark purple. 'Not long left,' Quinby thought. 'Oh well. It's nice while it lasts.' Watching the fireworks, the cat smiled, wider this time. Content with the life they'd gotten. As they should be.
