Instructions

⚠️ Noise warning: Please follow the instructions to protect your ears: 1. If you have headphones (recommended), put them on. 2. Turn the volume down. 3. Click the leftmost button, labeled "On a good day". 4. Turn up the volume until you can hear a faint high-pitched sound. That is (similar to) what my tinnitus sounds like on a good day. 5. Try the other two buttons to listen to what it sounds like when it's worse.

Description

✶✶✶ What is Tinnitus? ✶✶✶ Simply put, tinnitus is hearing sound that isn't there. Normally, our ears process vibrations from sound waves and translate them into signals which are sent to the brain. With tinnitus, the brain gets these signals even if there are no vibrations. The perceived sound can vary a lot between individuals. My tinnitus is quite mild, with just a high-pitched tone that doesn't really interfere with other sounds, and is tolerable even in a quiet room, but it can be perceived as a variety of noises. I actually have two more types of tinnitus, but don't think I can simulate them well. One type kind of sounds like walking in snow, following the rhythm of my pulse. It only seems to happen when I am exhausted, and it comes in waves. For the longest time, I thought that the other type was the sound of my racing heart beat when I'm stressed - I can kind of *feel* it pulsating as well - but when I check my actual pulse, it doesn't match. The body really is fascinating :D Learn more here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tinnitus https://www.health.harvard.edu/diseases-and-conditions/tinnitus-ringing-in-the-ears-and-what-to-do-about-it ✶✶✶ Credits ✶✶✶ Photo by Severin Candrian on Unsplash: https://unsplash.com/@feeypflanzen Tones generated with Audacity.
