I awoke with a start. I glanced at the clock, it was 6:30. I took a deep breath, the dream I’d just had fresh in my mind and yet far away at the same time. I got up and got dressed, thinking about the dream all the while. A figure in the shadows… a crown on their head… and even worse, a spear of water flying straight towards Naomi’s chest. And her body. Lying in a pool of blood. I shut down that train of thought as I opened the door to wait in the hallway. Brazen opened his door a few moments later. He nodded. “Morning.” I smiled slightly. “Hi.” Harlow walked out, and Naomi came out nearly at the same time as Calli. Harlow led us to the breakfast hall, Brazen and Calli walking behind her, and Naomi and I trailing behind. One look at my face, and Naomi frowned. “What’s wrong?” “Just a dream,” I muttered, and yet I couldn’t shake the feeling that it had some prophetic meaning to it. For breakfast, Naomi, Harlow, and Brazen had cereal. Calli had pancakes, while I had a bagel. We went through the school day as normal. It was an oddly peaceful day, nothing remotely unusual happened. After school, Harlow and Calli went out to the woods, while Brazen went to Professor Raymond to practice his Creative Writing. Naomi and I were studying in her room. Twenty or so minutes later, she closed her Literacy book and I finished the first draft of a Potions recipe. “Okay, so seriously, what’s wrong? ‘Just a dream’ does not cover your expression right now,” Naomi asked, looking up. I sighed. “You really don’t want to know.” “I don’t care. I want to help, Acwulf.” That made me give in. People rarely called me Acwulf unless they really cared. “A dream. There was a person in the shadows, with a crown. And a w-water spear-” my voice cracked and I looked down. “It… the spear hit you, Naomi. And your body, I saw that too.” I choked down tears. Naomi gasped. “Anything else?” I shook my head and looked up. Naomi stood and hugged me. “I promise, that will not happen.” “Then why so much detail?” “I don’t know, but I won’t let that happen. If I were in your shoes, and I saw your body…” she trailed off. “I already have. Those 40 minutes were the worst.” She took a breath. “But you survived.” I nodded. We never talked about the time I took the pain curse for her. She smiled sadly and sat back down at her desk. Harlow and Calli came back inside, and Brazen finished with Professor Raymond. The five of us went to dinner, each of us getting a variation of a grilled cheese sandwich. Afterwards, we still had time left before lights out. Naomi went into Harlow’s room with Calli and Harlow, while Brazen came into mine. I sat at my desk. He stood awkwardly in the doorway. I smiled. “You can sit, you know.” He smirked and shut the door. He sat on the bed, pulling out a paper and doodling. “Did you have a dream last night, too?” “Um, yes?” “What did you see?” “A person. Wearing a crown. And a water spear.” I was intentionally vague, I still wasn’t used to being this open to my friends. “Did the spear hit anyone?” “...Naomi,” I said after a pause. He held up his paper. In those two or three minutes, he’d managed to sketch an accurate picture of Harlow, lying in the same position as I’d seen Naomi. I winced. “You saw the same things?” He nodded and set his paper down. “Yep. Except I saw the person’s face. It- she was female.” “Any features?” I asked, curiosity blooming. He nodded again. “Ice blue eyes, dark skin. Curly black hair, but the rest I didn’t see. Oh! Her crown was black, with sapphires set into it.” He held up the paper again, showing me the face. I nodded, studying the paper. He lowered it a second later. “How long have you been drawing?” I asked, changing the subject. His pencil froze as he thought. “Since I was 4, I think.” “How good were they back then?” He laughed. “Nowhere near as good as these. Mainly just colorful scribbles, but some of them were actually meaningful… I drew a fox once, and then a few months later I figured out I could shapeshift. Or recently, I drew Cozbi’s body in one of my doodles.” My eyebrows shot up. “You didn’t tell us?” “I-I didn’t think it meant anything.” I thought for a moment. “That could be useful in the future. Tell us next time?” He nodded. “Anything that’s not animals or random other doodles, I’ll share.” I laughed. We went to our respectful dorms, and fell asleep. This time, no prophetic or non meaningful dreams occured.
