I buried my face in my hands and quietly sobbed. I felt a hand on my shoulder, but couldn’t tell whose it was. “Wolf,” Harlow’s voice came quietly a few minutes later. I brushed tears away and looked up. “Yes?” “I think-” Her voice cracked. “I think I know how to bring her back.” “You can resurrect the dead?” I asked skeptically. “Not exactly.” She looked up at Calli, who must have climbed down after Harlow had killed Cozbi. “She’s… not dead.” “What?” How was she not dead? “Well, she’s only mostly dead.” “This is not the time to reference a movie,” I said irritably. She laughed slightly. “I’m not, she’s legitimately only mostly dead.” “But she’s not breathing and her heart stopped- oh.” I realized that in the movie she’d said she wasn’t referencing, the “mostly dead” person’s heart had stopped and wasn’t breathing. She smiled confidently. “Exactly. And Calli here can heal.” I looked at Calli and nodded. “That fits.” Calli smiled shyly. “Okay, so how does that add up?” Naomi asked. “I’ll remove the shadows, and Calli will heal her. That should work,” Harlow explained. Brazen nodded. “Let’s try,” I said. Harlow nodded and took a deep breath. She placed both hands on the spot where Shadow had been hit. Shadows flowed out and evaporated into thin air. Harlow removed her hands a second later and turned to Calli. “Your turn.” Calli looked terrified, but stepped up nonetheless. She placed her hands where Harlow had had hers, and after a few moments her hands began to glow. The yellowish-white light grew strong, almost blinding, then faded as soon as it had came. Calli lifted her hands and stood. Ren sprang up and came over to check his daughter’s pulse. I hadn’t noticed, but he’d been sitting silently at Shadow’s feet. He exhaled in relief, and I had to use every scrap of self control not to grin. Ren looked up. “Thank you,” he said to Harlow and Calli. Harlow nodded. “You’re welcome,” Calli answered shyly. I rolled onto my heels and stood, walking over to the edge of the clearing. I leaned against a tree and looked at Cozbi’s body. We’d wanted an answer from him, and I didn’t know if we’d gotten it. Naomi came over. “You okay?” I shrugged. “More or less.” She smiled. “We asked, by the way.” I looked up, a spark of interest in my eyes. “What did he say?” Naomi sighed. “He just said to wait. It would have taken longer if Harlow hadn’t helped, but…” she trailed off and shrugged. “We got an answer. That’s good enough.” I took her hand and squeezed it. She squeezed back. We both looked at the corpse on the ground. “To be honest, I’m scared of Harlow now,” Naomi said. I looked at her in surprise. “You weren’t already? I was scared of her ever since she revealed her powers.” It was her turn to be surprised. “Really? I honestly thought nothing scared you.” That was so funny and not true I laughed. “I’ve got a pretty good list off the top of my head.” “Okay, please share.” I smiled. “The full moon, Harlow, you, Ren, I’m allergic to grapes… Oh! Also-" “Two things,” Naomi started, cutting me off. “One; You’re scared of /me/?” I nodded. “You can take away people’s memories, Naomi, and control them and teleport into them… who /wouldn’t/ be scared of you?” “I never thought about it that way. And two; you’re allergic to grapes?” “Yep. Didn’t you notice I’ve never tried the grape pie around springtime?” “Yes, actually. I just assumed you didn’t like them.” The conversation hit a block. “What are /you/ scared of?” I asked after a few moments of silence. She thought for a moment. “You, Harlow, I /was/ scared of Cozbi, Ren, Carlos kinda scares me now…” I nodded and looked back over at the others. Harlow, Brazen, and Calli were talking off to the side, while Ren was pacing back and forth next to Shadow. “I’m gonna go talk to Harlow,” I decided. She nodded. “I was thinking of asking Ren something.” I squeezed her hand again, and let go, walking over to Harlow. Brazen nodded in my direction, and turned to Calli. “Can we maybe, um, go over there?” He asked, gesturing to where I had come from. Calli nodded, and I had to hide a laugh. Brazen’s girl skills were terrible considering he’d lived with a sister for 14 years. “Thanks,” I said to Harlow once they’d left. She nodded. “You’re welcome, but you should be thanking Brazen. He came up with it." “Really?” I said, impressed. “Yep. Well, he inspired it, but…” she trailed off and shrugged. “But still, I helped. Also Calli." “Yeah, about that- how long has she known she could heal?” She counted on her fingers. “About 20 or 30 minutes." “She just found out today?” That was crazy. “And had that much control?” “Yep. It’s impressive, but she’s always been a fast learner.” I nodded. At this point, Harlow walked over to Ren and Naomi, while I turned around. And met a pair of eyes that were still so similar to mine. Shadow was awake.
