Brazen ran off to find Calli, while I hastily scrawled a letter to Shadow. It was Saturday. We had two days to figure this out, and no time to waste. Shadow responded, saying that she would meet us at the mouth of the woods. Brazen came back with Calli, and the five of us went down to the woods to meet Shadow. I ran down the steps and along the path. I reached Shadow first. “So. The shadow part spread,” she said. I nodded. “Cozbi. We think.” “Makes sense. Who’s that?” she asked, gesturing to Calli. “Oh. That’s Calli.” “Why did you bring her?” “Brazen ran off to get her when we noticed. I have no clue why, other than that he likes her.” Shadow nodded. The others arrived. “Calli, this is Shadow. Shadow, this is Calli,” I said, introducing the two girls. “Do you have any powers?” Shadow asked. “Oh. Um, I don’t know,” Calli answered shyly, fidgeting with her fingers. Shadow nodded. “That’s fine.” I nodded. “Okay, everyone, this is your last chance to turn back. No hard feelings, but if you don’t feel up to this, you can go back.” I stepped closer to the woods. I wasn’t going back. Shadow stepped to my side, as well as Naomi and Harlow. Brazen looked at Calli. “You coming?” She hesitated, then nodded. “Yes.” They both stepped over to us. “Alright. Let’s go,” Shadow said, turning and running into the darkened trees. We followed. Along the way, when the darkness was thickening, a voice whispered, “If you want Cozbi, he’s that way.” I looked up. Ren was crouched in the trees, his black hair blown around his face by the wind. Shadow nodded. “Can you show us the way?” He nodded. “Come on up.” We climbed up after him, and eventually came to a clearing. It was darkest here. I studied the clearing. A form stood in the shadows. He was swirling shadows around the clearing, making a sort of whirlwind. He looked up. “Ah, the heroes of Welsburry.” He said the word heroes full of venom. Harlow jumped down first, Shadow followed. Brazen, Naomi, Calli, Ren, and I stayed in the trees. “Yes, and I see we’re facing the villain,” Harlow remarked, sucking the shadows into her hand, revealing the man in the shadows. He had pale skin, raven hair, and eyes blacker than coal. He was tall, and looked about ten years older than Ren. “And yet, in the other side’s eyes, you are seen as the villain, and I am seen as the hero. It’s all about perspective,” Cozbi retorted. Harlow shrugged. “So what?” “Witty remark,” he replied sarcastically. Shadow rolled her eyes. “Exchanging insults isn’t going to get us anywhere. Why are you here, and what do you want?” “Ironically, you’ve given me exactly what I wanted. You see, the other three of you are smart enough to hide, but they’ve sent exactly who they’ll come out to save.” He lashed out at both girls, but the shadows ricocheted and hit him full force in the face. Harlow smiled triumphantly. “They’ve also sent the one person who can repel you.” I turned to the others. “I’m going down,” I whispered. Ren nodded. “I’m going with you,” Brazen said. “I’ll stay with Calli and Ren,” Naomi offered. I nodded. Brazen and I leaped down. “Ah, two of the three remaining.” “Who do you think is here?” I asked. “You, Brazen, Harlow, Shadow, and probably Naomi too.” “Ah, but you’re wrong,” Ren called, teleporting behind Cozbi and throwing a knife. The knife veered off course with shadows, but still struck Cozbi’s right arm. He snarled and lashed out. “Well, more of you or no, I still can get you all handed over,” he said through gritted teeth. “Is that so?” Brazen asked. “Yes.” Cozbi turned to me. “Hand over your friends, and I’ll give you exactly what your heart desires.” “And that is?” I retorted. I had no interest in whatever he was going to offer. Or, so I thought. “Surrender your friends, and I will remove the effects of your bite from you.” He dropped that bombshell and waited patiently for my reaction. I stumbled as if his words were a stone. Which they were. “What?” I whispered. How did he know? That was impossible. “I can remove your personal ailment. Just hand over your friends,” Cozbi repeated.
