FLASHBACK Keigo heard hushed voices speaking around him. "It's King's daughter's brother basically. We can't just leave him here alone, he'll starve," one man said. Keigo groaned and they all fell silent. "He's awake," someone els said. He sat up and rubbed his eyes, "Where's Maddy?" he asked, trying to stand up. A woman with gray hair in a braid spoke, "We were hoping you could tell us that." Keigo's eyes went wide as he suddenly scrambled unsteadily to his feet and frantically looked around. "They took her! The men in suits! We got to go get her!" The woman grabbed his arm and held him still. "Look, I don't know your name, so I'm gonna call you Hawks. We don't know where they took her." Keigo didn't offer his name, as he didn't know the woman yet and Maddy has taught him to be careful of most adults. She said they'd take him somewhere terrible if they found him. "Where's my doll?" he asked, glancing over their shoulders through the rubble. He was looking for the Endeavor doll Maddy picked up that morning. They all glanced at each other and one man shouts, "He's too young! We'll never get the details out of him! King's daughter is gone and we broke a promise with a dead man!" The woman shushed him, "First of all, just because she's gone, doesn't mean she's dead. We did not break that part of the promise." Keigo looked around at each of their faces, "Who's King? And what promise?" The woman's eyes softened, "King was Maddy's father. Before he died, we promised to keep Maddy alive and in safe hands." Keigo looked down at his hands and clenched them into tiny fists, "I couldn't save her. That's not what a hero would do. A good hero would've made everything okay." Then he started to cry. He cried for Maddy, who was now missing. He cried for his doll, which always gave him comfort. He cried for whoever this King man as, because he has died. But most of all, he cried because he didn't fulfill a hero's duties.
