Girls aren’t objects. We aren’t “things”. We are humans. We are people. We are sisters, cousins, daughters, mothers, friends. We are so many things. Yet there are many things we should be, but we can’t be. A girl shouldn’t be scared about the way they dress, just because they think someone might harass them. A girl shouldn’t be forced to make decisions that make them feel uncomfortable, just because they’re somehow less “deserving”. A girl shouldn’t feel judged by the things they do, just because they aren’t not stereotypical. Similarly, a boy shouldn’t be assumed to be a pig, just because perhaps some other men are. It’s FINE that maybe a girl wants to dress up, look pretty. It’s OK that maybe a girl wants to wear pink, or maybe not. It’s not OUR FAULT, if someone decides to target us as their victim. It’s not your fault. Nobody should be pressured or attacked just because of their race, gender, looks, or something that they can’t control. We can’t control it. We just can’t. Yet they still don’t care. It still happens. Did you know that every 98 seconds someone is assaulted? Did you know that could be a kid? An innocent 5 year old. Maybe your next door neighbor. Maybe your baby cousin. Maybe your best friend. We can’t stop all of it. There’s too much darkness in this world for the light to completely hide. But we can help. If you think you, or someone you know is being harassed, assaulted, or attacked, let someone know. It’s hard. But not harder then living with the fact that you could have done something. We can make a change. A small one. But it’s still a change. Because we aren’t objects. Girls aren’t objects. We’re more than that. So much more. So much more than just a pretty face.
I apologize in advance that if some of you think that’s this project is focused on just girls. I know that anyone of any gender can get harassed, but seeing that most victims are women, and I’m a girl myself, I decided to focus on that. Please note that this is serious. About 8/10 students in school get sexually harassed in some way. That’s 80 percent. Please spread the message.
