Shadow, Ren, and I appeared in the clearing to see Naomi, Brazen, and Harlow about to leave the clearing with Jackie and another girl, who I later found out was Sam. Naomi glared at Ren. I held my hands up in surrender. “Don’t worry, he’s on our side.” “You expect us to believe that? When he shot the curse that almost killed you?” she shot back. I flinched, not needing that reminder, but I met her eyes, trying to show her that what I’d said was true. Ren was staring at the ground. “See? I knew this would be their reaction,” he muttered quietly to no one in particular. Shadow sighed. “They’ll get over it. Just be patient.” “Well, Harlow, Brazen, and I have to go help Carlos, so could you please quickly explain why you felt the need to teleport away without any explanation and come back with the enemy?” Naomi said. I blinked, thrown back. “What happened to Carlos?” Naomi looked at the ground, and I left the subject. For now. “Never mind. Shadow and I had this theory... Long story short, Ren had a monster, which is why he was evil. Now he doesn’t have the monster, so can we trust him for now? Please?” Brazen sighed. “I guess so.” I nodded. “So, why do you need to help Carlos?” “You can come with us, Wolf. Shadow, could you stay here with... him?” Naomi asked. Shadow nodded. I followed Sam, Naomi, Jackie, and the twins through the woods to the treehouse grove. We met a scene there that is one of the top 10 worst scenes I’ve ever seen: Diego pacing along the tree line, Danielle rocking back and forth on her toes next to Carlos... who was laying, unconscious, on the ground. I gasped quietly, not sure how Naomi was taking this. Harlow stepped up. “What did he do, and how can I fix it?” “We don’t know what the Shade did - by the way, I’ve never heard of him, so what’s his name?” Diego asked. Harlow paled slightly. “His name is Cozbi, or at least that’s how we know of him. He’s famous because he’s evil. This guy is also a werewolf.” “Okay,” Diego said. I shuddered. “The shadows went straight to Carlos after weaving between us, then he stayed conscious for a few moments to tell us to get you, then he passed out,” Sam said. Harlow nodded. She stepped up to Carlos, placed a hand on his chest, and closed her eyes in concentration. I moved next to Naomi and took her hand. She squeezed it, I squeezed back. A few intense moments later, Harlow stood up. “I-I think it worked. I’ve never worked with the shadows like this before.” Danielle took Harlow’s place, grabbed Carlos’s wrist, and exhaled in relief. “He’s a lot stronger than he was before. Thanks.” Harlow nodded. The four of us went back to the clearing where Ren and Shadow waited. I pulled Naomi into the woods off to the side, out of sight of the others. “Are you okay?” I asked. She hesitated. “Sorta? I mean, he’s alive, but…” I nodded. “Do you think we should head back? To school, I mean. We’ve been gone for a while, and things might be less hectic there.” Naomi paused, considering, then nodded. “Yeah. Let’s tell the twins.” I nodded, then leaned forward and kissed her. She smiled, kissed me back, then dragged me to the clearing to meet the twins. Ren, Shadow, Brazen, and Harlow were talking in the clearing when we got there. “Ready to go back to the school? For real, this time?” Naomi asked, glancing at Ren. Brazen’s eyes lit up as he nodded. “Yes!” Harlow grinned. Shadow pulled me aside. “Is Carlos okay?” I nodded. “Yep.” She glanced over at her father. “Well, good luck. I’d better go explain to my grandmother why I’ve been gone and came back with my supposedly dead father.” I smirked. “Good luck yourself.” She smiled, turned to go, but turned back around and kissed me. Then, she went over to Ren without any explanation, and they teleported away, leaving me to figure out what just happened. I went back over to the others, trying to act like nothing had happened. Brazen shapeshifted into a dragon, and Harlow, Naomi, and me sat on his back as we flew back to our school.
