. Chapter 2 . ᴛʜᴇ ꜱᴛʀᴀɴɢᴇʀ "Ow!!" The tom hissed and rubbed his head. "What the heck was that?" "S-sorry," Mirai said with a squeak. "I mean.. we aren't supposed to be outside of the border. Who.. who are you?" The tom yawned before saying, "I'm Smokey. And you?" "Mirai." The tom nonchalantly rubbed a wet paw over his forehead before turning to Mirai. "So, you're one of those test cats?" he murmured, glancing at her metal paws. Mirai swallowed hard, nervously, and nodded, sweeping her tail over the metal. "Erm.. who are you, again?" "I just said. I'm Smokey! Are you dumb?" The tom sat with a small hiss. "N-no," Mirai stammered, then puffed out her chest. This was a spy she could be dealing with. "I mean, where are you from? I've never seen you in the village, and you most definitely weren't in the crowd this morning. Who are you.. really?" Smokey let out a small chuckle. "I forgot, you don't know about us. I'm from a.. well.. a small group of cats way out beyond the plains." Mirai raised an eyebrow. "..And?" "That's all I can say, we don't want the humans to find us, and I don't trust you very much at the moment." He motioned towards the screw can, which Mirai fumbled into her bag quickly, hissing, "Sorry..." "Let's get to the point, then," Smokey said, ignoring her apology and standing up. "Are you willing to come with me to our place? I can't tell you much at the moment, but we need someone like you." Mirai blinked. "Me?" "Well, you're the only metal-mark that hasn't reported me to your guards for trespassing yet, so, yeah, you." Metal-mark? Mirai shrugged it off. "I don't even know what this is about. How can I trust /you/?" Smokey let out a groan and flopped onto the grass dramatically. "Ohhh, this is tricky." He looked up at Mirai. "I can tell you more, but you need to sneak out here. The guards will notice me before long, and I don't want you to get in trouble, too. Come here at midnight, OK?" "Midnight?" "Like, when the moon is showing? At the center of the sky?" Oh! "Like moon-high," she stated. Smokey nodded and sat up. "Right here. I have to go, but please come. We're all counting on you." After that, the tom got to his paws and darted away, leaving Mirai in the now pouring rain, dumbfounded. Who were "we"? And how did he get here, anyway?
