Despite this, Proto Man still attempts to defy the Mega Key's hold over him.

Unlike his knockoff copy, Proto Man's not playing around and is packing a couple of new tricks. Gameplay-wise, Proto Man can be fought at any point after at least two Tier 2 bosses are dead.
