At 2:30pm that day, we were wandering the woods. Brazen and Harlow went back in to study, and Naomi stayed a bit to talk. Eventually, she left to study also. I headed to the Wolf Fruit grove, waiting for Shadow. At 2:35, she appeared in the trees. “Hey,” I called up. She jumped down from the tree. “Hi.” “So, what’s your reason?” I asked, leaning against a tree. The breeze blew my hair around my face, bringing flashes of black over my eyes. “Just wanted to talk. Didn’t know how long it’d take,” Shadow answered, holding a bag of candy. I nodded. She continued, “So, you know I live with my grandmother. The reason is because my mom was sick, but she’s getting better.” She stopped, not sure what to say next. I looked more closely at the bag of candy. It said “Sweets Galore” on it. Then it clicked. “You lived in Welsburry Village, didn’t you,” I realized. “What?” Shadow asked. “Welsburry Village. You lived there.” “Oh. Yeah, I did.” I waited for her to remember. Recognition flashed in her eyes. “You did, too!” “Do. I do live there,” I corrected. “And I left when my mom got hospitalized. Just after Raza was born.” I nodded. So, Shadow lived in the same place I did. We were best friends, but she left when we were 6. Her mom got very sick, so she left to live with her grandmother while her mom couldn’t take care of her. “So your mom is better?” I asked. “Yeah. It only took 9 years,” she replied. “Better than never.” “True, I guess.” I was silent, thinking about when she and I lived in the same place. “When she gets better enough, she said we can live together in Welsburry village for the summer, and with my grandma in the school year,” Shadow told me, sitting on the ground. My eyes lit up. “Really?” “Mmm-hmm.” “That’s great!” Shadow smiled. “Yeah, it is.” I smiled back. She tossed me a candy. I took it gratefully and ate it. We chatted a bit more, then I went inside. The twins and Naomi were in her dorm. I found them and knocked. “Come in,” Naomi called. I walked in, and sat on the floor, closing the door behind me. “Hey, Wolf,” Naomi greeted me. “Hi,” I replied. Naomi was sitting on her bed, Harlow on the floor closer to the desk, and Brazen at the desk. “So, what would you guys like to do?” Harlow asked us. “Um, I don’t know,” Naomi replied. Brazen was thinking about something to do, and I was thinking about Shadow’s news. “How about-” Brazen started, but then was interrupted by the dinner bell. “I guess we’re going to dinner,” I said. We went to the busy dining hall, and sat at our usual table. I got a ham and cheese sub, Naomi got a grilled cheese sandwich, Brazen got pizza to split with Harlow. When we finished eating, we went back to our dorms. Brazen and Harlow went to their dorm first, and Naomi and I walked the short distance to our dorms together. “Night, Wolf,” Naomi said, smiling. I smiled back, and she went into her dorm. I went inside mine, and uncorked the Wolf Potion. The sun was just going down, and I went to sleep as a human, not a wolf.
