Instructions

I woke up hanging from a tree. My hands were tied together, and that rope was connected to a rope tied to the tree branch above me. My legs were bound as well. I was hanging just next to a Wolf Fruit Tree. /Snap/. The sound of a rope being cut made me look down. My legs had been cut free. Another /snap/. This time, I fell with my arms free. “Get up here,” a voice in the tree hissed. I looked up, and saw a girl who looked just like me, except I’m a boy. She held out her hand, and I grabbed it. She pulled me into the tree. We crouched on the tree branch, and spectated the campsite. I had a sneaking suspicion of who had captured me, and I desperately wished that wasn’t the case. After about 5 minutes of hiding, though it felt longer, we relaxed some. “What’s your name?” I asked the new girl. “Shadow. Yours?” She never really looked at me; she had her eyes trained on the camp. “Acwulf. You can call me Wolf.” “Are you a werewolf?” She turned to look at me, in case I gave her a silent response. I nodded. Shadow turned back to the camp. “Same here.” I didn’t know how to reply to that, so I watched the camp. Shadow watched the formal tent that had gotten me into this mess. Eventually, a man came out of the tent, erasing all hopes that he wasn’t behind this. Shadow made a noise between a grunt and a whimper. “Great. Just brilliant.” I had to smile at her sarcasm. That was one of the things that I liked about Brazen and Harlow; practically every other sentence they said was spoken in sarcasm. “You know him too, then?” I asked. She nodded, “His name is Ren. Or, that’s his first name.” “I know that. He’s the reason I’m a wolf.” “Oh. I don’t know who bit me.” We were silent for some time after that. “Do you ever want a different name? Like, one that doesn’t tell everyone what you are once they know?” she asked me, continuing to watch Ren in the process. “Sometimes.” “I like that, actually. I wish my name was that obvious.” “You do?” I’d never met a werewolf like that. Then again, she was the first friendly werewolf I’d ever met. “Yeah. It would save me a lot of trouble, trying to explain everything. To any friends,” She said the word like she barely knew the definition. “Oh.” Ren hadn’t noticed I was gone until then. He glanced over, and saw the cut ropes hanging and on the ground. He fumed for a second, then yelled his head off at the guards. “HOW COULD YOU LET THE BOY ESCAPE?!” His voice almost made me flinch. Shadow cursed as Ren knocked the guards unconscious. Brilliant choice, seeing as how he wanted a better guard system, not unconscious bodies. He stormed off to hire new guards. “We’d better get going.” Shadow leaped from tree branch to tree branch until she was over the exit. I followed, somehow not losing my balance and blowing our cover. Or, what was left of it. We landed on the ground, and were about to run when a sinister voice cut through the silence. “Well, so this is where the boy went.” Ren stood behind us with two other people behind him. His hands were positioned, ready to perform another extreme pain curse at the slightest movement. “Yes, this is where I went.” I snapped my fingers, and the guards collapsed. “You-” Ren was so mad, he couldn’t form words. I fake-smiled, and the Extreme Pain curse flew to the back of Ren’s left hand. He instantly hit the ground. “C’mon.” Shadow climbed up the next tree, and led us through the treetops to the school. It was Sunday afternoon. I’d been unconscious for 24 hours. Naomi was at the door, and brightened when she saw me. “Wolf!” “Hi.” I walked up to her. Shadow had melted into the trees. “What happened?” Naomi asked me as we headed for our dorms. “I’ll explain with Brazen and Harlow.” My shoulder still hurt a bit from the curse, a fact that I hadn’t noticed till now. We went to the twin’s dorm, and I explained. “That was brave, Acwulf,” Harlow commented from her bed. Brazen looked relieved that I’d come back alive. We ate dinner after that. I was ravenous; I hadn’t eaten for 24 hours. The four of us walked back to our dorms at 8:15pm, and we said good night to the twins. Naomi and I walked back to our dorms. “Night, Wolf.” She hesitated, then kissed me. She smiled, and went to bed. I stood there, unmoving, for a whole 2 minutes, then went to bed, grinning.
