It's Juneteenth (created on June 19)! Joe Biden signed a bill that made Juneteenth a federal holiday on June 17th! Move your mouse - mini parallax. So, here's the history: Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863. Texas was part of the Confederacy, and the farthest away from the main action, so a lot of slave owners went there. The news of the Proclamation didn't reach Texas because it was so far away! Juneteenth marks the day when Gordon Granger, a Union general, arrived in Galveston, Texas, on June 19, 1865, to inform enslaved African Americans of their freedom. YAAAY! But then, slave owners didn't want them to leave and began to treat them unfairly. The African Americans started doing some things to show their uniqueness. For instance, people ate and drink red foods/drinks as it showed perseverance. Also, some rich African Americans bought a gigantic park where people celebrated Juneteenth in an almost fair style. These became traditions, and we celebrate them to this day.
