After lunch, (The fish sandwich special and soda), we went our separate ways to our rooms to study. I needed to clear my thoughts before anything else, though. I stuck my head out the window and let the November breeze blow by. Was I really going to keep letting the bell save me from telling my closest friends my secret? Well, really my only friends. That would mean that my teachers knew, but not my friends. That was just cruel. Then I thought of the potion I’d been looking forward to making; The Wolf Potion. In Potions Class tomorrow, I could test it out. Then I could make myself tell my friends, if Circle of Secrets didn’t make me first. /Knock, knock/. “Come in,” I called, once I’d pulled my head back in the room. Naomi opened the door. “Hi,” she said softly, “Were you studying?” I shook my head. Now I was thinking of last night, when she’d kissed me. Did she really like me? I hadn’t admitted to myself that I might’ve liked her more than just a friend, but maybe I did. “I wasn’t either. The whole time, at least,” Naomi replied, sitting on the bed. “Any reason you came in?” I asked her, as I sat at my desk. “Do you know anything about werewolves?” Her question shocked me. “Y-yes,” I answered, trying not to sound too frightened. She took a deep breath. “So, I have-had a brother.” “Okay. Wait, you said you have first, then you said you had.” “Yes. He…disappeared. Or was taken. I don’t know which.” “Why?” “He-he was a werewolf,” she stared at the ground. I was silent, in shock. I knew this was a good time to admit my relation with her brother, but I didn’t know how. I tried, though. “I am, too,” I whispered to the floor. I wasn’t sure that she’d heard me, since there was silence for about 5 minutes. Finally, Naomi acknowledged that she’d heard. “I had my suspicions,” she told me quietly. She had lifted her head and was looking at me now. I returned her gaze. “And yet you still like me.” “What’s there not to like about you?” Well, I did not expect to hear that. We were silent for a bit, thinking. Naomi returned her gaze to the floor. I looked out the window. Eventually I opened a book to actually study. I looked over the Wolf Potion again. I didn’t care if Naomi saw me looking now. Now I just needed to tell the twins. /Knock, knock/. The door opened, and Brazen stuck his head in. “Done studying?” he asked us. “Yep,” I answered. Naomi nodded. Harlow called from outside, “Want to keep playing Circle of Secrets?” “Yes,” I called back. Naomi just shrugged. “C’mon, then,” Brazen headed with his sister to their dorm. Naomi and I followed. We opened the door to find Harlow and Brazen sitting on the floor, Harlow holding the bottle. We sat to complete the circle. The bottle spun. /Plink/. Naomi’s turn. “M-my brother… he disappeared,” Naomi looked like she was forcing the words to come out of her mouth. Harlow gasped quietly. “When?” Brazen asked. “When I was 4,” Naomi answered. I’d been bitten the year before. Harlow opened her mouth to ask another question, but Naomi reached out and spun the bottle forcefully. It landed on me. I stood, and pulled out Raza, Dad, and Mom’s letters from yesterday. I placed the papers in front of the twins and sat back down. There was silence while they read the letters. “You-you’re a werewolf,” Harlow said. Brazen set down the papers, and stared at them for a couple seconds, then met my eyes as if to ask me to confirm it. I nodded. “If you want to le-” “Why would we want to leave?” Brazen asked. “Yeah, why? Just because you’re a werewolf does not mean we don’t still want to be friends with you. You’re still you, Acwulf. We just know more about you,” Harlow replied. I smiled, “Thanks.” I can’t describe in words how good it felt to get that secret off my shoulders. My friends could help me carry the weight, just like we always did.
