I woke up the next morning to sunlight shining through the window in my dorm. I got out of bed, pulled on some clothes, and looked at the clock. Luckily, it was Sunday, since Halloween was a Saturday. If it hadn’t been, I would’ve slapped myself. The clock read 8:52. Class would’ve started almost an hour earlier if it were a weekday. I opened the door, and walked outside. Naomi’s door was closed, but her light was on. A few rooms over, the twin’s door opened, and Brazen walked out, followed by his sister. “Hey,” I said as they came over. “Morning,” Harlow told me as Naomi opened her door. “Hi,” she said, and the four of us headed towards the dining hall. We sat at our regular table, and got our food: Naomi and I got pancakes, and the twins got chocolate donuts. All of us got a glass of orange juice. In about 10 minutes, we finished. “What are we going to do today?” I asked. “Get ready for classes starting tomorrow, probably,” Brazen answered as the dishes disappeared. Naomi nodded. The girls went off to study in the library, while Brazen and I went to his room. He sat at his desk, and I crossed my legs on the floor. We opened the same books, Advanced Potion-Making. I looked over the Wolf Potion recipe, and I think Brazen looked at Mischief Maker. I bet you can’t guess what that does. After an hour or so, the girls knocked and came in. I closed the book as fast as lightning as they walked over. “Ready?” Harlow asked Brazen, holding a glass bottle. He nodded. “For what?” I asked her. “We’re gonna play Circle of Secrets,” she explained. Naomi smiled at me, though it looked forced. I tried to control the level of color in my face as the sentence Brazen’s sister had just spoken sunk in. In Circle of Secrets, you sat in a circle, and spun a bottle. Whoever it landed on, they had to tell a secret they’d never told anyone before. I hated the very idea of this game. The twins sat next to each other, I shoved the book aside that I’d been looking at, and Naomi sat near Harlow. Harlow spun the bottle, and it landed on Brazen. “Oh, um… well, I tricked the Potions Teacher in assigning poison making to that guy… What was his name? Oh right, Thomas,” he mused. Harlow stifled a laugh. Naomi smiled, not forced. I smirked, remembering that class. Harlow spun the bottle again. It landed on her. “I cursed Brazen once,” she told us. Naomi blinked. “You did what?” “I cursed Brazen,” Harlow repeated. “What curse did you use, and why?” I asked. “Uh, it was a while ago. I think I used the-” “Controlling curse,” Brazen cut in. Harlow nodded. “Yeah, that one. He was annoying me. I mean, more so than usual,” she finished, glaring at her brother. The bottle spun again, and it landed on Naomi. She looked paler than I must have when Harlow announced the game. “My brother, he-” Naomi got cut off by the bell. She looked relieved. “Lunchtime,” Brazen muttered as we went out to the dining hall.
