Books in the Park chp. 1 - Anne sat in the park, a book in her lap. She stared out across the park, at families eating picnics, toddlers on swings, friends laughing by the ice cream stand. She sighed and leaned against the oak tree she had been sitting under. For once, she didn't feel like reading. In fact, she felt lonely. She wished she had friends to hang out with Anne had always been a bookish child, and most of her time had been spent at the park alternately playing and reading whilst her mother checked Twitter. Now that she was thirteen, and in eight grade, Anne went to the park by herself. Anne checked her watch. Five. Time to go home, or else she would be late for dinner. If her mother even bothered to make dinner. Usually they ate takeout. With a sigh, she gave one last wistful look at the laughing friends by the ice cream stand, then picked up her book and hurried home.
