Estimates by me may differ from official reports - Cyclone Idai was the deadliest storm of 2019, and the deadliest storm in south-west Indian ocean history. The storm first formed off the coast of Northern Mozambique and made landfall as a weak tropical storm in the country a few hours later. The storm remained over land for a few days before re-emerging into the Mozambique Channel. The storm then rapidly intensified, with scratchmater295's re-analysis indicating the storm reached category 4 near Madagascar. The storm weakened to a category 2 as it moved towards south Mozambique, but re-intensified, and reached its likely peak as a category 4 cyclone. After that, the storm weakened back to a category 2 but re-intensified to a category 3 as it made landfall in South Mozambique. The storm's impacts from mainly flooding but also wind were catastrophic in Mozambique and Zimbabwe. Over 1,500 died, and millions were impacted.
