On Mia's 12th birthday at her orphanage, she looked outside and saw a gryphon battling an evil centaur. She rushed outside just as the gryphon beat the bad centaur, but the gryphon was badly wounded. So, Mia tended to his wounds, and the gryphon then saw her as a friend. He brought her to Camp Half-Blood, and she went willingly, not wanting to go back to the orphanage.
