Instructions

I woke up the next morning to the smell of bacon and fresh baking bread. I was happy for some time, then I remembered that tomorrow was the full moon. That lowered my happiness level quite a bit. I got ready for the day, then walked outside of my dorm. Naomi was waiting with Harlow and Brazen. “Hey Wolf,” Brazen said, grinning his signature sly grin. “Hey,” I replied. “Morning,” Naomi said, and Harlow smiled at me. I nodded, and we headed towards the dining hall. “Did the escape work?” I asked Harlow in an undertone. “You bet,” Harlow replied. We entered the dining hall and sat at a table. We got our breakfasts: Naomi had a bowl of oatmeal and orange juice, I had waffles and hot chocolate, Brazen and Harlow had doughnuts and chocolate milk. “What are your plans for tomorrow, Wolf?” Naomi asked. I shrugged, “I don’t know yet.” Heck, yeah I did. “Want to explore some more?” Brazen suggested. I thought for a moment. “Sure. The woods?” I asked. “Yeah. The shadow part. You liked that, remember?” I did. We were exploring the woods, like we always did after school. We stumbled upon the dark parts of the woods, and got lost. I was the only one who understood that part of the woods, and I got us out of there. It was also the first time I’d actually enjoyed myself that week. “We can do that,” Harlow decided. Naomi nodded. “Cool,” I replied as I finished up my breakfast. Brazen grinned through a mouthful of doughnut. Naomi laughed at the look on his face and leaned back in her chair. Harlow tried to suppress a smile, but laughed anyway. I grinned at Brazen. “Enough talking about tomorrow, what are we doing today?” I asked. “Studying,” Brazen and Harlow replied in unison. I did a double take, “What?” “Studying,” Brazen repeated. “Who are you and what have you done with Brazen?” Naomi asked, grinning. “We have mid-term tests coming up. They are pretty challenging in the 5th year,” Harlow answered. “Well, okay then,” I replied as the dishes disappeared. “Come on,” Naomi got up from the table, and started heading for dorms. Brazen, Harlow, and I followed her. I got my books from my room, and the twins did the same. Naomi was sitting on her bed when we walked into her room. We had generally studied there when she made us. I sat down on the floor and opened my Astronomy book. Harlow opened her Enchanting book, and Brazen opened his Math book. Naomi started writing down something for Literacy. I didn’t take that class, so I can’t say what she was writing. Too soon, the lunch bell rang. We got up and ate. Then, we went outside near the Wolf Fruit tree to continue studying. We studied for the whole day, minus the small break times. The dinner bell rang, so we packed our bags and went inside. Brazen grinned, “Fall break’s almost over.” “True,” Naomi replied. The sunlight glinted in through the windows. We ate together, and then when night settled in, we headed for our dorms. “Night, guys,” Harlow said as she and Brazen went inside. Naomi smiled at me, and went inside her dorm. I went inside mine, and there on my desk there was a bottle with a note. It read: Acwulf, I am so glad I was able to make this for your birthday. Drink it tomorrow night and you won’t turn into a wolf. Happy Birthday, Mom I grinned. “Thanks, Mom,” I whispered. I wasn’t tired yet, so I sat down to write back to her. Mom, Thanks for the potion. That’ll probably beat any present my friends give me. How are you and Dad doing? I am okay over here. Classes are good. Please send some cookies for Thanksgiving. I’ll be home for Christmas break. Thanks again, Acwulf The words flowed out of my pen, which is one reason why I took Creative Writing. I was better at writing then other stuff. It was easier to tell my stories from the first person, to pretend I’m someone else. Not a werewolf. Of course, tomorrow, October 31, was going to be a good day, I wouldn’t be a wolf for the night, thanks to Mom. I smiled as I crawled into bed.
