Sorry this took so long! “SO YOU’RE Maeryn’s problem?” someone asked as I stepped out of the throne room. Father had called Hana to talk with her about something, leaving me alone with my imagination. “Um… it depends on what you mean by ‘problem’.” She groaned. “Her betrothed!” “I guess so. Who might you be?” “Crown Princess Alexandra Providence Sierra Pritchard Mitchell I of Simrieg — her older sister.” “Hello,” I said, wanting to end this conversation. “I can help you.” “With what?” “Proving your case.” “What case?” I was playing the fool again. “Listen, if you want to get that sweet girl of yours, you have to stop playing the fool.” “Fine. What do I do?” “You have to get me into council.” “But aren’t you the ambassador? Shouldn’t you already be in council?” From what I knew of the Simriegan royal family, the crown prince or princess was always the ambassador to a neighboring country. “Your country and mine are in a tough spot right now.” “Who do you think Maeryn fits better with?” “Edward obviously! That’s why your country has been failing so miserably in the war. We’ve been fighting with Albannak on Maeryn’s request.” “Of course,” I mumbled under my breath. “I’m not pretending. I can help! I want this war to be over just as much as you. This was all a big mistake that my coward of a father isn’t willing to fix.” “Right. I’m expected to believe that.” “I can prove it!” “How?” “I’ll show you. Meet me in the theater room tomorrow at midnight.” I nodded, rather curious as to how she was going to pull this off. “Hello? Princess Alexandra?” “Over here!” she called back to me. She had pulled a large white screen down from the ceiling, a projector standing in front of it, shining more white light onto the screen. Do they film everything? Alexandra fiddled with the reel for a moment. The soundless, black and white picture started playing, showing King Nixon sitting down with his council in what was apparently their throne room. “The next little while is just Father talking with his council.” She fidgeted with the film again, skipping the part that didn’t matter as the scenes flew by. “Now he’s asking for Maeryn to come.” A few minutes later, Maeryn entered the room, her face mottled as though she had been crying. “Why’s she sad?” I whispered. “She just came back from Albannak. Edward announced that he was going to be leaving to spy on a town in your country — Stonecliff or something.” “Stonedocliffe,” I corrected. Hana. He was spying on her. I was right. “Whatever. Here, she’s asked which kingdom she wants to fight with.” “And what is she answering?” “Albannak.” The film ended. “Why did your father even agree to the treaty anyway? He knew she was already betrothed.” Alexandra shrugged. “He said it was a stupid mistake.” “It was stupid, alright,” I muttered. “What’s your plan?” She grinned. “Get me into council, and I’ll take care of the rest.” “Sure.” I stood to go.
