Hi there! Tomorrow (4/22/2021) is Earth Day! On Earth Day, we learn to reduce, reuse, and recycle. This is sometimes known as the three R's. First of all, we must reduce. The first R means to reduce our use of materials that are bad for the environment. By doing this, the amount of trash ending up in natural habitats will be much, much less. This can slowly save endangered species of animals, some of which are especially important in the food chain. The second R means to reuse things that you can. This will prevent a lot of garbage from ending up in nature. There was a story of a woman who lived in the US who took all of her kitchen scraps and used them as fertilizer for her plants in her garden. You can also make crafts with these materials. Reusing is especially helpful with plastic, since toxic gases, most of which are greenhouse gases are released into the atmosphere when plastic is burned. The third R means to recycle as many things as possible. By recycling, we prevent trash from ending up in landfills. Recycling also helps turn old materials into new materials. Composting your kitchen scraps to make fertilizer is also very similar. Most paper, plastics, and metals can be recycled (that means nylon underpants too!). However, you don't only reduce, reuse, and recycle on Earth Day. You can do it every day! This will contribute to both trash problems (like the Great Pacific Garbage Patch) and climate change. Doing this everyday makes the world a much safer place for everyone. Happy Earth Day! - Pathogen
