“LOUIE!” I HEARD again. It was even louder. Our army came bursting in through the doors, drowning out all the screams. Why didn’t they come earlier? “I’m coming!” I said, coughing as rubble from the ceiling fell on me, the dust getting into my lungs. We have to get out of here. I thought. I heard a sigh of relief. “Louie!” And I was wrapped in the arms of Hana. “We don’t have time for this! The ceiling is going to collapse! We have to get everyone out!” Good thing there isn’t another floor on top of this, I thought. She nodded. “Let’s stick together. I don’t want to be separated again.” “How did you get here?” “My father is the royal cobbler,” her eyes went wide as she continued. “Father!” she said quickly, tearing herself away from my side. An Albannanise guard stepped in front of her. “The prince fancies you, eh?” there was no sign of accent. He must have been practicing for years. I stepped between her and the soldier. “Don’t hurt my Hana.” “Oh, I’m sorry,” he mocked, “am I ruining the lovely couple?” Yes, yes, you are. I heard a gunshot, and the world turned muffled. My hands flew to my middle, and what felt like in slow motion, I fell to the ground. I heard a scream, and I felt as though I were being dragged across the ballroom floor. I saw Hana’s eyes, and the world turned dark. “Prince Vigilius?” I heard a few days later. It was a male voice, soft, yet firm. I groaned. “You’re awake?” “I think so…? What day is it? Did we win?” I sat up, my eyes flying open, only to be stabbed with pain in my side. “Shh,” he hushed me. “You’ve been through a lot, young man. Keep it easy on the questions.” “Where’s Hana?” I said. “What’s wrong with me?” “The bullet went clean through, luckily. You’ll be off your feet for a few days and minimal visitors.” “Minimal?” I questioned. “Why minimal?” “I don’t want you to get over-excited.” “I won’t get over-excited!” The doctor sighed, ignoring me. “Where’s Hana?” I repeated. “Safe,” he assured me. “What’s your name?” I asked, doubtful. “Doctor Dwight Ardal Wyndsdor I, the royal family’s doctor, at your service.” I nodded. “Bring Hana to me,” I ordered. “I’m sorry, I can’t do that. She’s resting.” My eyes went wide. I sat up again, not caring about the blistering pain I felt in my middle. “What happened to her?” Doctor Wyndsdor walked to my bedside, gently pushing me back down. “I can’t tell you that. She has caused a terrible war.” “She didn’t start it, Maeryn did!” “You know that, and I know that, but their majesties the king and queen don’t.” “I need to see her!” “How about this: I’ll give her a note next time I see her.” I nodded. “Tell her…” I love her. “Tell her…” I miss her. “Yes?” he asked expectantly. “Tell her I miss her, and that I hope she found her father.” “Anything else, or is that it?” I gulped. “That’s it.” His dull face broke into a smile. “You’re a lot different now than you were ten years ago,” he mentioned. “Yes, I know.” “What brought about this change?” “Um…” Hana. “It’s fine, you don’t have to answer.” “Hana.” “The peasant?” “Yes.” “Ah.” I nodded, face blazing. “Their majesties aren’t going to like this,” he whispered, turning around so I couldn’t read his lips. “I heard that! And ‘their majesties’ already know.” He swallowed. “I’ll give Hana your message.” Dr. Wyndsdor pulled something out from his coat, holding it under my nose. “Take a deep breath, it will help you fall asleep.” I took a deep breath, my wound stinging painfully. I passed out.
