The rain drizzled down, making Birdpaw's fur slicked down. Birdpaw's hopes dropped as she saw that the hunting patrol dropped only a scrawny mouse on the fresh-kill pile. She hadn't been training much since one day, Redstar told her she wouldn't be having Tigerclaw as a mentor anymore. OK, then who WAS her mentor? She was about due for an assessment. Wolfpaw and Eagle'paw had already had an assessment. She stood up and walked over to the entrance of camp. Firetail came over. "You have a burr behind your ear," He muttered, and bend his head down to hers and took it out. "Thanks," She sighed. Firetail flicked his ear. "Want to go hunting? You seem upset." "Just- Embersnake and I used to be such good friends. Now she.. just..." Birdpaw huffed. "I'm waiting for Redstar to assign me a new mentor. I don't know- apparently Tigerclaw is too busy to train me." Firetail opened his mouth to speak, but a call sounded across the clearing. "Firetail! Come here!" Firetail turned around, and Birdpaw saw Embersnake padding over. "Oh. You're here," She muttered to Birdpaw. She looked down, guilt washing over her again. "I'll see you later, Firetail," Birdpaw murmured, and walked away. --> part 2 (of ch. 19) <-- Redstar woke up, his throat tight. "Spottedleaf?" He called from his den. The night had come, and Redstar felt horrid. Spottedleaf appeared. "What's the matter, Redstar?" "I feel sick." Spottedleaf nodded absently and observed her leader. "Whitecough, maybe greencough. Stay away from the Clan." Spottedleaf exited the den to get herbs for Redstar, when a bone-chilling cough sounded through the camp. The whole camp was sick.
