Description

Estimates by me may differ from official reports - Hurricane Dorian made the strongest landfall in the satelite era. The storm struck Great Abaco island in the Bahamas on September 1, 2019. Dorian started off as a tropical storm east of the Lesser Antilles in late August. The storm struck Barbados as a moderate tropical storm on August 27. The storm was expected to continue west and strike Hispaniola. However, Dorian's center was destroyed as it crossed the Lesser Antilles, and a new center formed about 50 miles to the north. The minor center relocation changed just about everything. Instead of moving west, Dorian now moved north, meaning that the storm would not have any major land masses to strike. Dorian intensified into a hurricane as it struck St. Croix and then St. Tomas. Despite the storm's close proximity to the island, Puerto Rico barely received any impacts due to the fact that the storm's west side was very small at the time. Now over the open Atlantic with no land to disrupt it, Dorian began a 60 hour long intensification phase as it turned west, towards Florida. By the time the storm reached the Bahamas, it was a catestrophic 185 mph category 5. The storm made landfall twice on the Abaco Islands and then made two landfalls over Grand Bahama at a similar intensity. Dorian stalled for over 36 hours, causing extreme damage on the northern Bahamas. Luckily, Florida, which was expected to get a category 4 landfall, only received tropical storm conditions. Dorian turned north and brought tropical storm force winds across the US east coast. The storm got close enough to bring hurricane force winds to the Carolinas, although a major hurricane landfall near Charleston was avoided at the last minute when the storm turned. Dorian made landfall on the very tip of North Carolina as a category 2. The storm then accelerated to the northeast and weakened to a category 1. Despite being in very cold waters, the storm managed to re-intensify into a category 2, and the storm became extratropical just before striking Atlantic Canada as a massive category 2 equivalent. The storm then moved north and dissipated.
