This is just me thinking out loud... The battles would have a time based battle system like final fantasy, but would have attack commands like the Mario & Luigi games... In the battle you would be able to switch between the characters on the battle field any characters you aren't currently playing as will be controlled by the computer (This will allow them to attack, defend, use items, and continue the commands for you if switch characters in the middle of an attack or special skills) however the enemies can also attack in real time causing more interesting fights to happen...
