AFTER THE ball, I went into my room where Zarola had been waiting. “How was it?” she asked urgently. “Oh, it was fine,” I answered bluntly. “You’re hiding something.” I thought for a moment, then nodded. “Where was Braden? Do you know? He was supposed to be here!” tears formed in her eyes, making her voice sound strained. “He was doing a favor for Elbert,” “It must’ve been a big favor.” Zarola snapped angrily. “I haven’t seen him around for a while.” “I’m sorry,” “It’s not your fault! I’m going to go put Bert in his rightful place.” she rolled the sleeves of her work dress up as though she was getting ready for a fight. My eyes went wide. “No! You can ask him ― nicely ― what Braden’s doing for him.” Zarola shook her head, tears streaming down her face. “I really wanted to go to the ball with Braden,” she whispered. I crossed the room and put my arms around her on tip-toe. “I understand,” She nodded, and wrapped her arms around me. “Thank you,” she whispered. “You’re welcome,” I smiled and let her go. After one last squeeze, she let me go, and walked out to ask Bert what Braden was doing. I swiftly changed, took my hair down, and went to sleep. I didn’t understand my dream that night. Both Peter and Bert were in it, and for some reason Bert was standing in front of the castle in the center of the kingdom, and Peter was with him. “Shh, here comes Hana!” Dream Bert whispered as I came upon them. Peter coughed and resumed his usual stance, feet shoulder-width apart with his hands behind his back. “What do you need?” I asked. “Oh nothing,” Dream Peter and Bert chorused. I eyed them suspiciously. “Fine,” “Hana,” Dream Peter said, motioning to the path after a few minutes. “Do you want to take a turn around the gardens with me?” “No, thank you.” I answered. “Would you like to go with me?” Dream Bert asked. I blushed. “Yes,” He beamed, and nodded to Peter. “Good day, sir.” Peter looked furious, and stomped in the opposite direction. We went inside the castle, and Bert twisted through the halls as though he had walked down them millions of times before. We stopped in front of two large doors. Dream Bert threw them open to reveal a magnificent room. I cooed and sat on the chaise lounge in one corner. Bert followed, sitting right next to me. I raised my eyebrows. Bert mirrored me. I laughed, and he did it again. The door creaked open, and just as I had stood up to open it, High Master Kieser appeared, but for some reason his eyes were blue. Dream Bert startled, and ran out of the room. I remained there, curious as to what the High Master would do. His expression angered, and he brought from underneath his cloak, Peter. “You didn’t go around the gardens with me.” the new Peter said. “What are you saying?” I asked, my breathing heavy. “You didn’t go around the gardens with me!” he said louder, hissing slightly. “What?” I was panting. More Peters entered the room, all of them chanting loudly. “I LOVE you, Hana. I LOVE you Hana.” I woke up just then, cold sweat running down my back and neck. I was gulping for air, my heart beating violently. As I realized I was only dreaming, I calmed down, laying back on my cot. I fingered the thin cotton sheet, wishing I was back at home.
