Estimates by me may differ from official reports - Cyclone Nargis is the deadliest storm of the 21st century. The storm started off as 01B in the bay of Bengal and intensified into a cyclone as it moved northwest. Then, Nargis turned east and intensified into a category 4, making landfall in Myanmar. The storm then moved inland and dissipated. Nargis caused a storm surge that went over 30 miles inland. The result was catastrophic, and the death toll is likely over 150 thousand. The storm is regarded as the worst natural disaster in Myanmar's history. The storm was also the costliest NIO storm until that record was broken by Amphan in 2020.
