Of all the despicable serpents that could be inhabiting her swamp. It just had to be the mud serpent. Couldn't it have been a water serpent or a Flower serpent? At least cats have a chance of killing them! Didn't the last of the mud serpents die when the mud plague hit? It took most of the animals who took even a single step into the swamp. It certainly managed to take several of her clanmate's lives. She bounded up to the highrock. "Clan meeting!" She announced, but most of the Clan was already there. "Okay, so as you all know, many moons ago a terrible plague struck our swamp." She began. "It may have killed several of our dear Clan members,-" A few cats in the crowd hung their heads. "-it also killed off what mud serpents there were left." The clan nodded. "Well, I regret to inform you all that somehow, they are back, and have taken five of our beloved clanmates." Mews of protest and confusion broke out as she finished. Troutpool crept quietly up the highrock and whispered something in Snowstar's ear. She gasped. "I- I have just been informed that along with the five cats-" She paused to name those that lost their lives. "-My dear adoptive sister has died from a fatal injury." A cry of pain came from Featherbreeze's mate, Toadstone, and then Troutpool whispered something else in her ear. "And so has our newest Clan memeber, Fluffkit.." She said, her usually steady voice trembling. Suddenly, she just couldn't deal with the loss of seven clanmates in one day. Tears welling up in her eyes, she yelled, "Clan dismissed!" and leaped down, dashing for her den. She laid in her mossy bed, and a cat came into the moonlit tangle of vines. "Snowstar, should I arrange more patrols because of the loss of Clan members or fewer because of the serpents?" Iceflower asked. "The same amount of hunting patrols, but don't send out any border patrols. StormClan seems like they're being peaceful." She said, but the last few words came out in a mumble. Iceflower nodded and padded back out to arrange patrols. That night, Snowstar had her usual nightmare. The river, her mother, and the foxes. She sighed. But younger her didn't run. She froze. Everything froze in time. The only thing moving were the ripples on the foggy gray water. Suddenly, a mud serpent burst out of the water. Its head hit the ground with a loud thud as it ate the two foxes whole. It whipped around towards her mother and ferociously bit her, swallowing her as it did the foxes. This never happened in her dreams. The serpent lifted its head up and slowly turned until it was right in front of young Snow. It opened its mouth and Snow saw her mother begging her to join her. Snow hesitated, and then stepped into the serpent's mouth. Snowstar was shocked. The serpent then slithered up on to land, which it shouldn't be able to do, and opened its mouth again. This time in the mouth there was her mother and her adoptive sister. She took a deep breath as she stepped forward into the serpent's gaping jaws. End of Part Four
