Instructions

Day 7: Today was the day. Today was the day I was gonna get in the attic. I told Mango and Low my plan. Low looked skeptical. “This could get you in SO much trouble.” She said helpfully. “Yeah, thanks. I know that.” Mango looked like she wanted to intervene, but she stopped herself. “Now, you both promised you wouldn’t say ANYTHING about this, agreed?” “Of course, but-“ “I’m going now.” I tip toed out of my room, and gently shut the door. The carpet was cold under my bare feet. Nothing was stirring. The counselors were all at the mess hall, eating their breakfast before going back to their cabin. I had about 15 minutes. Could I do it? I stopped myself just outside the counselor room door. This was not smart. But I had to do it. Sorry Alba, Sini, and Li. I opened the door. The room was a lot like mine, except way bigger, and it had two bathrooms instead of one. Their was also, of course, the trap door up above. I took a slow breath. Only ten more minutes. I reached the string and pulled the trap door slowly. The ladder came down too. I climbed and entered the place in my nightmares. I was huge. I thought I would have to crawl, but I could jump in their if I wanted to. There were wooden beams, and broken light bulbs up their. None of them worked. I grabbed a lantern and headed in the direction I knew was right. There it was. A chest. Of course it was locked. (How cliche.) I sighed in frustration. WHY had I dreamed about this?! I wasn’t a counselor, or an enemy of the classical cabin! Why did I need this? I checked my watch and- Oh no. It was to late. The counselors were coming. I had no time to run. I could hear them climbing up the stairs. I turned of my lantern and closed the trap door. I stayed quiet, though I was sure my breathing would give me away. I heard the door knob rattling when- “Oh! Alba! I wanna ask you something!” It was Low. “Um, sure! What’s on your mind?” Low kept talking. I had a minute to make my move. I opened the trapdoor, climbed down the ladder, and then put it back. The door was not an option. The only other option was- I stared at the window. So there I was, 50 feet off the ground, hanging desperately to the wall in the howling wind. I finally banged on the window of room 7. Mango, who was staring at the door that Low had gone through, gave a start, but immediately let me in. “What, I-“ “Thanks.” I gasped. Low entered, looking calm. I didn’t meet her eyes. “Er, you were right. Sorry.” “That’s alright. But let’s never do that again, agreed?” “Agreed.” We chimed.
