⬛⬛⬛⬛⬛⬛⬛⬛⬛⬛⬛⬛ READ ⬛⬛⬛⬛⬛⬛⬛⬛⬛⬛⬛⬛ • Hi! I want to spread more awareness on this snazzy and extremely helpful thing called "Tone indicators." • Words can mean a bunch of things, and when you comment something it may be hard for some people to understand what you meant. /srs (/srs = serious) ———————————————————————— #1 Explaining tone indicators I'm going to use "You're a great friend." as an example. Imagine you're scrolling through notifications and you get a comment saying "You're a great friend." The comment may seem sarcastic to some people, but if that person used "You're a great friend. /g" That would mean it's a genuine thing they are saying! /g = genuine • Tone indicators were created specifically for people who may have trouble interpreting text, but it's best to try to use them in most situations. • Even if your comment may seem like an "obvious" joke, it could still be taken seriously. Like "Bingus is coming for you." that could be seen as a threat, so using the tone indicator /j = joke it makes it a lot easier to understand. "Bingus is coming for you. /j" /srs ———————————————————————— #2 Misusing tone indicators • Misusing tone indicators isn't a funny thing to do, it can cause people who rely on tone indicators to misread messages. Tone indicators are meant to explain intention, and by misusing them you're hiding the actual intention you have. • Not using tone indicators is not ableist, but making fun of them, mocking them, and misusing them on purpose is. /srs ———————————————————————— #3 List of tone indicators • Here's a quick list of tone indicators! (There's a lot more, and I'll leave a link in the notes & credits for them) /j = joking /hj = half joking /s = sarcastic /srs = serious /p = platonic /r = romantic /t = teasing /nm = not actually mad or upset /nc or /neg = negative connotation /pc or /pos = positive connotation /lh = light hearted /li = literally /ly = song lyrics /ij = inside joke /th = threat /f = fake /g or /gen = genuine ———————————————————————— #4 Using tone indicators • Again, it does not make you ableist to not use tone indicators, but tone indicators are very helpful and I do recommend using them! • You don't have to use tone indicators all the time if you do use them. (Using them for every sentence might come across as mocking/misusing tone indicators, make sure you only use them for sentences that may be misinterpreted!) ———————————————————————— Links are in the notes & credits section for more tone indicators & further explanation
