Prologue Snowcloud rushed into the medicine cat den. “Twigtail! Twigtail is having her kits!” Ferndapple—the medicine cat— rose her head with a jolt. She ran over to her apprentice, Robinsong. “Wake up sleepy head! Get the herbs! Twigtail is having her kits!” Robinsong yawned and got up. He was moving with tiredness. “Move it! A medicine cat is always ready!” “I know. I know. But its—” Robinsong shut his mouth and started gathering the herbs as fast as he could when he saw the look Ferndapple was giving him. When everyone was ready, Snowcloud ran out of the den. Tired warriors and sleepy apprentices were coming out of dens to see what was going on. Normally, Snowcloud would be ashamed for waking everyone up. But not tonight. Tonight he was going to be a father. Snowcloud noticed himself purring. He didn’t stop. He didn’t want to. When Ferndapple, Robinsong, and Snowcloud got to the nursery, Snowcloud was nervous. Would Twigtail be okay? Would the kits be okay? Would the kits survive the coming leaf-bare? So many nerve racking questions were buzzing in his head. “Stay out here.” Ferndapple told him. “But I’m the father!” “I said stay out here.” Snowcloud went quiet. He knew he couldn’t win an arguemeant with Ferndapple. She is old but she isn’t mouse-brained. She knows what she is doing. To Snowcloud, everything looked like it slowed down. It felt like moons have passed since Ferndapple entered the den in which Snowcloud’s mate’s fate lies. Finally, Ferndapple came out of the den. “You have three kits. Two toms and one she. One of the toms is... well... he is special..” There was worry in her voice. Snowcloud took a breath and entered. Twigtail—with her beautiful brown fur— lies in the den. She was happy. Ferndapple must have tried to make him worry as a joke. Snowcloud noticed three beautiful kittens with his mate. “I’ve already picked names for them.” Twigtail purred. “The she-kit will be Daisykit. This tom will be Hawkkit. And this one— will be Sandkit.” Snowcloud admired his kits. But then he noticed something about Sandkit that he hadn’t noticed before: Sandkit was missing his two front legs!
