The cries of pain were not Fluffkit's. Fluffkit was eerily silent. The cries of pain were coming from Mintmoss. She screamed Fluffkit's name. Snowstar dashed on to the Thunderpath, grabbing Fluffkit from on the Thunderpath, then she went back over again to help Mintmoss across. Her back leg looked pretty badly injured. "I- I can't believe I missed him..." Mintmoss whispered. "I sh- should have been able to grab him..." A tear rolled down her greenish-gray cheek fur. "You couldn't have helped it. Now let's get you back to ca-" Snowstar began. "Yes I could have! I've spent way too much time wallowing around in the nursery! This is just a wake-up call! StarClan clearly thinks I'm too weak, and is telling me to train, by killing Fluffkit!" She screamed. "Mintmoss, you're delirious from blood loss. Come on, back to camp with you. And Fluffkit probably isn't dead." She said. She picked Fluffkit up by his scruff. Rustyfoot, Lakeripple, and Skipperpaw came out of the undergrowth. "What in StarClan happened here?" Skipperpaw asked. "Mom, are you okay?" Lakeripple asked. Lakeripple and Troutpool were Mintmoss's second litter. Mintmoss let a small no escape through her quiet cries. "Skipperpaw, Lakeripple, can you carry Mintmoss back to camp?" Snowstar asked. They nodded and let Mintmoss lean on them. "Rustyfoot, grab today's catches, no reason to waste prey. I'll get Fluffkit." She said, grabbing Fluffkit's scruff in her mouth. Rustyfoot picked up a squirrel and two mice, and padded back. Snowstar laid Fluffkit down in the medicine den and began to lick some of his wounds clean while the medicine cat, Troutpool, gathered the needed herbs. As she licked his wounds clean, she was much less sure that he'd survive. He was breathing though, which was a good sign. Troutpool came out of the little unfinished rabbit burrow used for herb stroage. He turned to his apprentice, Shadepaw, and asked her to help Mintmoss. Shadepaw nodded and padded over to Mintmoss. Troutpool asked politely if Snowstar could leave so the medicine den would be less cramped, and Snowstar of course nodded and exited the den. She padded nervously out of the den. She hoped her clanmates would be okay. Especially Fluffkit, who might not even get to become an apprentice. She didn't really know what to do with herself, so she decided to check on the apprentices. She always loved checking in on the future of her clan. She poked her head into the apprentices den, but there was only one apprentice inside. "Say, Skipperpaw, where did the other apprentices go?" She asked him. "Uh... I think Pebblepaw and Daisypaw are hunting, Nightpaw, Cloudpaw, and Crowpaw are all training with their mentors in a group, and I don't know where Starpaw or Rockpaw went." Skipperpaw said. "Hm. Thank you Skipperpaw. Have a good day." She said, turning out of the den. A yowl sounded in the clearing. Snowstar and Skipperpaw both rushed out of the den to see what was happening. Snowstar's sister, Featherbreeze, was panting and gasping, her fur was standing straight up. She was trying hard to explain, but was panting too hard. "Featherbreeze! Breathe for a moment and then tell me what happened." Snowstar told her. "It- it ate them!" Featherbreeze began, her tail fluffing up even more. "It ate them! It ate Clamfoot and Thistlethrash-" she paused to catch her breath. "And Cloudpaw and Nightpaw and Crowpaw!" She screeched. "What ate them?!" Snowstar asked. "The-" She suddenly passed out, and it was then that Snowstar really noticed the deep fang marks on the side and back of her head. Skipperpaw dashed off to get the medicine cat. "They're back." Snowstar said. "Who's back?" Iceflower asked. "The Mud Serpents." Snowstar said grimly. End of Part Three
