Figurative language is the use of words in a different way to create a meaning colorful effect when writing. Types of figurative language: -Hyperbole: a phrase that is exaggerated, not literal in meaning. "My backpack weighs 1000 tons." -Simile: a comparison used with "like" or "as". "The water was as smooth as glass." -Metaphor: a comparison with "was" or "is". "The water is glass." -Personification: putting human attributes to nonhuman objects. "The trees danced in the wind." -Alliteration: repeating the same first letter of a sentence. "Andy ate almost all the apples." -Onomatopoeia: a word that has a sound effect. "The car went POW." -Cliche: a phrase that has been overused. "No pain, no gain." -Idiom: a phrase that doesn't literally mean what is says.
