Snowstar pounced on the plump rabbit. "This will make a fine meal for Sundrop and her kits!" She said, turning to her friend, Rustyfoot. He nodded. They headed back to SnowClan camp, both of their mouths full of prey. Snowstar's deputy, Iceflower, greeted them with a flick of her tail. "Prey's running well, I see." Iceflower said, looking at the plentiful catch they had brought back. Snowstar nodded. Snowstar called Windpaw, an apprentice, over, and asked him to take the rabbit to Sundrop. Windpaw nodded and dashed off to the nursery with the rabbit. Rustyfoot chuckled. "I hope I have an apprentice one day!" He said wistfully. He turned away and went to share a rabbit with his mate, Sparrowlight. Snowstar padded over to the prey pile, depositing her catches, then took a rabbit for herself and sat in her den. She had barely taken her first bite when Reedpool, head of that morning's dawn patrol, stuck his head into her den. "Snowstar, we kinda have a situation." He said shyly. Snowstar released a small sigh and stood up. "Okay, what is it?" She asked, hiding her annoyance well. "A Kittypet. A kitten Kittypet." He continued. "The cheeky little guy wouldn't leave our territory and go back to his twolegs. We eventually tried attacking him and chasing him off, but the pesky kitten is so fast and agile!" He explained. "Let me talk to him." Snowstar said. She was quite good with kits. She had many, many, moons of experience after all. If she wasn't the leader, she'd be telling stories to kits in the elder's den. She padded down the sun-warmed rock of her den, and sure enough, there was a dark orange tabby kitten wearing a lime-green collar. "I'm taking over your group!" He said in a high-pitched voice, unsheathing his tiny claws. Snowstar stared at him. "Look, buddy, I'm the leader of this Clan. Do you really wanna mess with me?" She asked him. The kitten stared at her face for a while. Lots of cats were intimidated by her scar over her eye, because it made her look meaner that she was, but once you got to know her, she was a very nice cat. "I guess not." The kitten decided, sheathing his claws. "Can I at least be in your Gr- ..I mean Clan? It looks sooooo much more fun than being a boring housecat." He asked, making a cute pleading face when he finished talking. Snowstar stared at him for a minute. "Are you absolutely sure that's what you want?" She asked him. "Yep!" He responded. "Okay. First, tell me your current name so I can give you a Clan name." She told him. "My name is Benjamin Fluffikins." He said. "Ooooookay- So I'm gonna say your new name is, uh-" Snowstar paused to think. "Fluffkit?" She said. "Yay!" Fluffkit said, bouncing eagerly up and down. He dramatically ripped off his collar. I'm a Clan cat now!" He giggled. By now, half of the clan had come into the clearing to see what was happening. "I could show him around!" Said Mintmoss, a queen who stayed in the nursery even after her kits had grown up to help other queens. "Very well. Mintmoss, can you show Fluffkit around and explain some of the rules to him?" Snowstar said. "Yes, I can and gladly will." She said. Mintmoss was getting too old to have kits of her own, so she took any chances she could to take care of kits. "Say, Mintmoss, would you like to be Fluffkit's caretaker for the next few moons until he's an apprentice?" Snowstar asked, smiling. "I thought you'd never ask!" Mintmoss said happily. Snowstar sat back down in her den, and was about to continue eating her rabbit when someone burst into her den. "What is it no-" She didn't get to finish. "WHOA! THIS DEN IS THE BEST! CAN I SLEEP IN HERE, MINTMOSS?" Fluffkit said, Mintmoss dashing into the den after him, grabbing him by his scruff. Snowstar chuckled at them as she heard Mintmoss lecturing Fluffkit on the dens and which ranks slept in which. Snowstar finally was able to eat her catch in peace. The rest of the day went as usual. She hunted some more- she was very good at hunting- and she went on the daily StormClan border patrol. She settled down in her nest at sundown, and closed her eyes. She woke to see her younger self. Her younger self and her mother. Her father had run away when she was born because he didn't want to take care of a kit. He was a loner. Young Snowstar, Snow at the time, and her mother were swimming in a pond. Snowstar remembered this, but she always tried to repress the memory. Here they come, She thought. And just as she thought it, out of the undergrowth came two large foxes. Snowstar turned away from the scene. She hated this recurring dream. She had it every few nights, ever since that day. She turned back for a moment, and there was her mother, fighting hard while Snow ran back to their small abandoned twoleg shack where they lived. She would always regret that she never even looked back. Snowstar jolted awake. She sighed and laid back down. She didn't go back to sleep though. She just laid on her mossy nest until morning.
