Congrats on 1k, Rin!!!! <33 Thanks for hosting this contest - I had a lot of fun thinking about what to draw and went through many ideas. I will DEFINITELY be making more yokai art sometime. I've always been fascinated by yokai, for years, because of Doraemon. Other ideas I considered were: -kappa -kasa obake -chochin obake -okiku -hachishakusama -kuchisake-onna -noppera-bo (person with no face) -yuki onna (so many people did her :0) -seiryuu (dragon) I drew about 50 sketches but most of them never went anywhere... About my entry: 1. I used this contest as inspiration to develop this OC, which I designed a while back based on yokai. So this is my OC, Tamasi-kun. (pronounced tamashii) 魂. It means 'soul'. It's what he's known as because he doesn't remember his real name. • He is human (probably) and wears a hitaikakushi (white piece of triangular paper or cloth) and carries a shide (zigzag-shaped paper streamer) with him. • Unlike normal humans he can see and communicate with yokai and yurei. • He has 100 hitodama that follow him around. Normal humans can't see them.The hitodama are 'souls of the dead that have separated from their bodies'. • His job is to help any yokai and vengeful spirits fulfil their duties in the human world so that they can move on to the next world. Every time he helps a spirit, one hitodama stops following him. • He became cursed when he touched an unusual skull-shaped mask while on a field trip. He must always keep the mask on him or he will die and become a spirit himself. • Because of the curse, he has temporarily left the human world. Most humans cannot see him, and it takes a lot of energy for him to materialise. He remembers nothing about himself before the curse. • Once all 100 hitodama have left and he has helped 100 spirits, the curse will be lifted, his memories will return and he will be able to live a normal life in the human world again. • He has no memory of his age, but he is about 11-14 years old. His height is 4'9" and he weighs 74lbs. He is Japanese and speaks Japanese only. If Tamasi-kun's backstory resembles another character's, that is most likely entirely coincidental. I have no recollection of finding a similar idea anywhere. 2. Rokurokubi and nukekuubi. Rokurokubi are beautiful women that can stretch their necks indefinitely (nukekubi are a variant that can detach their heads from their necks). They drink oil to be able to do this, often from oil lamps. 3. Bakedanuki are raccoons that can shape-shift or create hallucinations.They are very good at tricking people. 4. Mononoke hime. She is a Studio Ghibli character. I thought it was quite fitting as mononoke are a type of onryo (vengeful spirit).
