*something* is italics, so on, so forth, I can't really be bothered to write this out again lol ________________________________________________________________________________________ Chapter 5: Enchanting, mesmerising particles, glowing a brilliant violet, swirled around them both, before fading into nothing. Jrum realised Xisuma was watching him curiously, azure eyes sparkling in wonder. “How do you know galactic?” “I- I don’t?” he stared at him in bewilderment. “And what was all that with the purple… things?” “I never supposed…” X paced the room, then seemed to realise it and stopped himself. “I- It was nothing.” “No it wasn’t.” Jrum burst out angrily, “I’m tired of all these secrets, these mysteries, I just want- I want-“ X nodded. “I understand.” He whispered. “We’ll talk… later.” He tilted his head slightly towards Scar, who was looking even more perplexed than Jrum was feeling. Startled, Jrum gave a little “Oh!”. He had almost forgotten that Scar was there, and gave an apologetic smile. “Um, sorry for forgetting about your entire existence?” He grinned. Scar raised an eyebrow. “That’s quite alright! Now oh Jrum and X what *was* that language you were speaking? It sounds so- so strange…” he trailed off, brow furrowed. “I can’t quite place it- What were you saying? And oh Jrum when did you learn it? I never knew! What is it?” “No you wouldn’t be able to place it, Scar. It’s simply that, well, you aren’t from our world. You- you wouldn’t understand. It’s too difficult to put in words, not in your overworlders’ language… Urgh I just can’t explain it-“ X looked annoyed, like he couldn’t quite remember a word. After a few minutes of internal struggling, he gave up, recomposed himself, and shot a sad smile at Scar. Which he couldn’t see. “But… I’m not from your world?” Jrum piped up “And apparently I can speak it?” “No.” X stared at him once more, seeming to scan him. “You aren’t.” He started pacing again, mumbling to himself. “…how…galactic…missing…it must be…Oh-“ Scar and Jrum glanced at each other, and the wizard cleared his throat. X looked up, shook his head, and steadied himself. “Well goodbye for now. I hope to see you soon.” They walked home in silence, each consumed in his own thoughts. At last, Jrum sighed, frustrated. “Well that did nothing. What did we actually gain from that?” “Um…” Scar paused, then admitted defeat. “Not… Much. Not on what we went there for.” All this was so confusing. The galactic, the sparks, the locket, the voice- And something, *something*, a fragment of memory that slipped through his fingers however hard he tried to grasp it- That was strange. He could always recount his memories, could replay them in his mind, yet… There was no use dwelling on it. Jrum needed to make up for the time he’d wasted visiting X. He’d gone looking for answers, instead receiving even more questions. It was all so- all so- He clenched his fists, wanting to scream and cry at the world, at Scar, he knew he was thinking like a toddler, that his reasons were petty, silly, what was he in this world, just a child, a mere child, unable to do anything. “Then do it. Shout.” Scar said calmly, “Nothing’s stopping you.” Jrum glared at him as if he were crazy. What was he doing advising him, pretending to be oh-so-wise, what did *he* know? “Oh Jrum. Why don’t you, ah, take a walk! I’ll leave you alone for a while, how does that sound? If you need me, I’ll be in my snail! You know where to find it? Then I’ll see you soon! I mean, if you want to be of course…” Slowly, Jrum nodded. He watched Scar bounce away, growing smaller and smaller, before turning away. He was alone. Perhaps the wizard was all too glad to leave him. Bits of winter still lingered in the early-spring air. Jrum blew, watching his breath swirl, allowing himself a small smile. He took deep breaths, letting his sliver of anger fade away, something his dads had taught him to do. His dads… Step after step, he wandered aimlessly, letting his feet lead him- Until he stumbled on a rock, falling face-flat on what felt like sand. “Oh-“ He then let out a string of words that were fortunately muffled. “Mind your language!” someone exclaimed in mock disapproval, standing over him, “Where in *Hermitland* did you learn those?” Jrum looked up to see a girl, probably the same age, or perhaps younger, than him, with dirty-blond hair in a tangled mess down her shoulders. Dressed in a kaleidoscope of colours, she had one eye in the middle of her head and metallic skin. That was not the strangest thing, however. She had this… eerie glow about her, shining in the shadows she stood in. Jrum realised he was staring and quickly cast his eyes down. The girl grinned at him, giving an sarcastic bow. “I’m Iris. Iris Button.”
