Because of how he looked, people worshipped him like a god. Now, since he didnt object to being treated like this the people were very mad when they realized he wasnt one. They chased him down and tried to slaughter him, and he only got away with a cut that was cursed to never heal on his arm (its really painful) and being blinded. Now with him no longer being worshipped, he fears that without people trying to make it so people remember him for all time, he's going to fade away as he's forgotten (figure of speech.
