Scratch doesn’t have italics, but some of this is supposed to be in italics, so if you see this: *pretend this is a masterpiece and is not just used to showcase the asterisks* it’s in italics. Yes. And also, if you see a line like this: ___________________________________________________ It’s either a memory, a dream, or some kind of time change Anyway, scroll down for the actual writing! ______________________________________________________________________________________________________ Jrumbot sat by the water’s edge, watching the waves drift in, then out again, as if the ocean itself were taking deep, slumbering breaths. He knew the sea did not, could not ‘live’, yet he felt that – somehow – it was alive. It both fascinated yet somewhat frightened him. Unfortunately, he also knew that he was not allowed to go near(…) ___________________________________________________ (…) “In case you fall in, and we wouldn’t want that, would we?” There was a trace of the ‘baby voice’ Groan had used on Jrumbot, when he was newly created. Jrumbot huffed. “I am no longer an infant.” He announced pompously. Grian started to laugh, but, seeing his little, dead-serious face, hastily stopped. Giving a small – and unnoticed – sigh, he looked him up and down. “No, you’re not.” He said simply, a slight, reminiscent smile forming on his lips “I can remember when you were just small enough to fit in my hands!” Grian chuckled, but blinked rather quickly. “Well… We can’t sit here thinking about the past forever! We’ve got the present to live, and wars to start!” He added the last part with a wink, and flew away, seemingly entirely forgetting the whole reason they had started this conversation. Something was not quite right. Grian did not do that often. Grian got to the bottom of things, and you always seemed to end up doing what he wanted. Grian did not simply end a conversation, just like that. But Jrumbot did not notice this, and how could he? He was too tied up in his thoughts, too relieved he did not have to leave what he had come to think as *his* sea. But still, back to Jrumbot’s point of view. Sometimes Jrumbot thought that Grian did see him as, and perhaps wanted him to be, the small robot who giggled, who depended on him, who was cute and cuddly and adorably innocent; the robot he once was. Sometimes- but no, he wasn’t like that. ___________________________________________________ Shaking the memory away, he reassured himself, “Grian would not mind-“. The ocean helped him with… the voices, it soothed him, it even calmed the aching storm inside for a while, and for a price. And… that was what his dads wanted, to help him… right? Of course… Cogs whirring slower, and slower, his thoughts grew fainter, until Jrum, lulled by the trees’ whispers, and the ocean’s sighs, let sleep take over… ___________________________________________________ * “Jrumbotttt…” A voice whispered his name. It was hoarse and scraping, yet had a slight metallic edge Jrum thought he recognised… “Jrumbotttt…” He was still sitting by the sea, but it was… black, almost like- like ink. He found, to his horror, it was rising. Trembling, his heart raced, and surely each heartbeat was counting down to his inevitable death… “Jrumbotttt…” The water had reached his waist. He attempted to run, but it was no use… “Jrumbotttt…” The water was now at his neck… above his head… he tried to swim up… but he could not swim… why would he even know how to swim? He sank down, down… Darkness. * ___________________________________________________ With a gasp, Jrum opened his eyes, scrambling away from the sea. All he knew was that he needed to get away. Forcing himself to look back, he expected to see the rising, midnight-black waters- But everything was normal again. Everything had been so real, too real. “It was just a dream.” He told himself firmly. The ocean had always helped in, and out of, his dreams, but this time… Filling with an early-dawn light, stars still twinkled in the sky. He must not have slept for long. Jrum tried to remember what had happened in the, what he now realised was short, but felt so long, dream. Someone had said his name, that wasn’t anything new, but he remembered drowning. How could he even drown? He did not need to breathe. “Exactly.” He said out loud, “It’s all just a silly little nightmare I had.” It did not help much. He would visit his dads, he decided. They would know what to do.
