Koinobori are windsocks, which are traditionally flown in Japan to celebrate Tango no sekku. There is a difference between "Tango no sekku" and "Kodomo no hi (Children's Day)". "Tango no sekku" is celebrated since Nara-period (ca. 710), which originated in China. During the edo period samurais started to celebrate it as boys day. On the other hand "Kodomo no hi" is quite new. In 1948 the Japanese government established this day to be a national holiday.
