Katrina... The one storm everyone in the US knows about. The storm is tied with Harvey as the costliest tropical cyclone ever recorded. The storm started off as any system near the Bahamas. It rapidly intensified into a hurricane before crossing Florida. As it entered the gulf, it began to rapidly intensify again, peaking as a category 5 with winds of 175 MPH. The storm weakened before landfall, but the storm hit the eastern tip of LA with winds of 125 MPH, or a strong category 3. Due to the storm weakening prior to landfall, as well as the track well east than initially anticipated, wind damage in New Orleans was far less than initially feared. However, the levees in the city, which New Orleans officials had been warned were not strong enough to withstand a hurricane, failed. After the storm passed on the morning of August 29, levees across the city failed, sending much of the city underwater, and killing over 1000. The levee failures are regarded as the worst engineering disaster in history. The storm was also massive, sending major storm surge as far east as the Florida panhandle. - Tags: #Hurricane #HurricaneAnimation #HurricaneKatrina #Katrina #Weather #TropicalCyclone #Meteorology #2005Hurricanes #Category5 #NewOrleans
