Estimates by me may differ from official reports Hurricane Maria was the 3rd-costliest Atlantic hurricane ever and the deadliest Atlantic hurricane of the decade. The storm started off in the MDR where it rapidly intensified into a category 5, slamming the island of Dominica as a category 5. After weakening slightly, the storm reached peak intensity as the most intense and second strongest storm of the season. It then hit Puerto Rico as a devastating category 5 storm (My analysis), and is regarded as the worst disaster in the territories history. The storm then moved north and affected the Dominican republic and the easternmost islands of the Bahamas, before moving northward and weakening, causing minor effects over North Carolina.
