The Moskvich 412 was a small family car, built by the Russian car manufacturer MZMA in Moscow between 1967 and 1975. It was a more prestigious, better equipped version of the Moskvich 408, sold for a higher price. It featured a more powerful 75bhp 1.5l slant 4, which according to some observers bore some similarities to the BMW M 115 engine (used on the BMW 1500), and an improved gearbox. From 1969, the Moskvich was updated, with bucket seats (replacing the 408's front bench), a floor mounted gearstick, and a new, better gearbox to make use of the available power. For a car of the time, it featured advanced technologies such as front disc brakes, and a dual circuit servo braking system, and was considered to be a very safe, durable car, and won class wins in the south africa safari rally, and was hugely sucessful in group one racing.
