| Chapter Two | Sunse | *Plop.* Sunse woke up to his fur drenched in wet cold water. His brother, Sap, was curled up beside him, and of course he was just out of the way of the freezing cold water. He could just hear Sparky (who was a silver fox, the Alpha’s son, and the most chicken fox you would ever meet) whimpering, and Badger, his mother, silently snapping at him to be quiet. He looked at his own mother, who was a black vixen named Dolly. She was currently fast asleep. Swift, the brown male that Dolly had taken in, was sitting at the entrance to the den, watching the rain fall. Sunse stood up and shook out his fur, taking care to spray most of the water onto Sap. “Hey Swift.” he butted the brown pup with his head. “Ah-! Oh- it’s just you Sunse. I thought it was Badger. Or Sparky. Or Sap. Or anyone besides you because you’re usually asleep.” Sunse made a noncommittal grunt. The two brothers sat side by side and watched the rain drizzle. “Can you believe that someone as wimpy as Sparky is going to be beta when he gets older?” Sunse bushed up his fur, while Swift jumped and hit his head on the roof of the den entrance. “Ow! Sap why’d you do that?!” Swift complained, rubbing his head. “Whoops! Sorry there.” Sap flicked his ear irritably “But still!” Sap scoffed. “If he ever becomes Alpha I’ll eat my tail.” “Then what’re you gonna use if you fall out of a tree?” Sunse asked. “Why would I even be in a tree? Trees are for point-ears. Not foxes.” “Shh! Snort’s arguing with Jumper again, look.” Swift muttered urgently. The three pups stopped, looked, and listened to Jumper, who was the alpha, and Snort, who was an omega, argue. Jumper’s long silver fur was alien to the way he was built. He was skinny and bony, and Sunse could see every one of his ribs. It was hard to tell, but Jumper was actually a very good fighter, using speed over strength. He was short compared to Snort, who was massive, strong, and whenever he walked, muscles rolled smoothly underneath his pelt. He strained his ears to hear the growled argument. He could just make out Snort growling “...you think you’re the best, you always have.” Sunse couldn’t hear what Jumper growled back but it must’ve upset Snort, as the massive male stomped away. Jumper shook his head, sighing, and walked over to where the three pups were. “Hey you three. I hope you didn’t see that, but as you’re clearly brimming and are about to burst with questions, I’m afraid you did.” Sunse was trained by Addie, a cross fox with a white splash on her chest that looked like a heart. She was patient and calm, which rivaled Sunse’s impatient and rude nature. They didn’t really get along, but Addie trained him well. Sap’s trainer was Badger, who was strict but at least she wasn’t patient all the time. Swift got Snort, but they seemed to get along. “No, no, no. Sunse, you’re doing it wrong. Flick your tail up and stop dragging it.” Sunse growled to himself. Has she ever been impatient? He had tried many times to test her patience that day, but she was patient as ever. “Maybe try remembering that the quicker you learn, the quicker you can hunt, the quicker you hunt, the quicker you can have your own meal.” Snort told him. Sunse blinked, then realized that it made sense. “I’ll try that. But can we finish for today?” Addie nodded. “We’ll try again tomorrow.” Sunse rolled his eyes and followed Snort and Swift out of the clearing into the rocky terrain to camp.
