Follow for follow, also known as F4F is not a good thing that YOU should be doing. You DO NOT ask people "f4f?" it is a terrible idea and it doesn't let your fanbase grow, its more of just a ghost town of nobody who actually cares about your projects. Another thing with this is that the person who followed you can unfollow you and they won't notice. I once did this and unfollowed them and they didn't unfollow me. Follow for Follow is not a good idea.
