Hurricane Katrina was one of the deadliest and costliest hurricane of the 21st century, hitting the southern coast of Florida as a category 1 hurricane before smashing into the Louisiana and Mississippi gulf coast as a strong category 3 major hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale (SSHWS). Hurricane Katrina was the 11th named storm, 5th hurricane, and the 3rd major hurricane in the hyperactive 2005 North Atlantic Hurricane Season.
