Jayfeather and Half Moon Fanfic: “I will wait forever.” The words rang in Half Moon’s ears. She swallowed back a yowl of grief. Jay’s Wing was gone, telling her that she needed to lead these cats, heal them, and change her name. Her anger toward him rose, but was quickly enveloped in mourning. “Oh, Jay’s Wing,” she whispered to herself, curling up in a ball, ready for sleep. “If only...” Jay’s Wing brushed against her. She blinked at him, feeling a purr rise in her throat. He twined his tail in hers. Half Moon felt it. She needed to tell him now, but her throat felt dry. Her voice came out too quiet for the tom to hear. “What was that?” His head whipped around toward her. Maybe he did hear. “I... I want kits,” she whispered, hoping he wouldn’t refuse. To her delight, he nodded, and brushed his flank against hers. “Kits...” he meowed slowly. He tilted his head playfully. “How many?” Half Moon leaped into the snow, feeling the coldness in her fur, but it was drowned out by their conversation. “Two, at least,” she said. Jay’s Wing bounded out with her, the snow clinging to his grey fur. His blue eyes sparkled. “Two. And their names?” “Feather Moon!” Half Moon burst out. “And Half Jay,” he joked, smiling. “But I like Feather Moon.” “Something that has to do with ‘jay’...” she trailed off. They were both silent. Then Jay’s Wing meowed, “Jay Flight!” “Jay Flight,” she echoed. “Feather Moon and Jay Flight. But what if there’s more?” “Little Bird,” Jay’s Wing said. Half Moon nodded. “Feather Moon, Jay Flight, and Little Bird,” Half Moon murmured. “If we have four, then we’ll come up with a name right then,” he said, moving to her side. His fur was protectively warm against hers as they walked back to the cave. ⁓⁓⁓ Half Moon’s whiskers tingled as Jay’s Wing crouched beside her. They were watching Feather Moon, Jay Flight, and Little Bird playing in the cave. Jay’s Wing gave a small meow of amusement as Little Bird toppled into the snow, her lithe brown pelt disappearing in the white. He got up and flicked her back on her feet, and meowed in amusement again when she was immediately ambushed by her two siblings. Jay Flight was a stocky grey tom with dark green eyes and powerful haunches, while Feather Moon was a white she-cat with grey tabby markings. Half Moon purred as Little Bird somehow managed to squirm away from the attack and walk over to her. Brilliant blue eyes watched her every movement. Half Moon glanced at Jay’s Wing, seeing his eyes the same color. But Jay’s Wing was frozen with shock, staring at Little Bird. “Jay’s Wing?” Half Moon asked nervously. Her mate shook himself and crouched down, but he was still troubled. “What’s wrong?” she whispered. He didn’t look up as he meowed, “Little Bird is blind.” “How do you know?” Half Moon asked, surprised. “She wouldn’t have known where the cave’s floor would end, so she fell in the snow, and didn’t see Feather Moon and Jay Flight coming to ‘attack’ her, so she didn’t get out of the way.” “How did you notice this, Jay’s Wing?” Half Moon asked. “She could just have adjusting eyes!” Jay’s Wing turned his head away. “My name is Jayfeather. I am blind. She inherited it from me. I have two lives; Jay’s Wing, cat of the Tribe, and Jayfeather, blind cat of ThunderClan.” “ThunderClan?” Half Moon meowed, surprised. Then her tone turned toward anger. “You could’ve told me! I trusted you!” Jay’s Wing, or Jayfeather, as he called himself, flinched. “No, you couldn’t have known. The Tribe lives in the mountains, the Clans live at the lake.” “There’s more than one Clan?” she exclaimed angrily. Sheathing her claws, she batted his ear. “Then go back!” “Half Moon!” he pleaded. “Our kits need a father.” “I can get another tom to help me,” she spat at her mate, arching her back and bristling her fur. “Half Moon...” “You could’ve told me,” she whispered, hurt spilling into her chest. She wrapped her tail around Little Bird. “You need to go back to your Clan, to your time.” He flinched again, but his voice was steady. “I’m staying here.” “Then I’ll go!” she snarled in fury. Uncurling her tail around her daughter, she got to her feet and fled. Her paws crunched on the snow, and cold clung to her pelt. Behind her, she heard Jay’s Wing shouting her name. But he had betrayed her. She could’ve known. It wouldn’t have done anything... Slowing to a stop near a large boulder, she let out a yowl to the sky. But in Half Moon’s yowl, her thoughts whispered, I will wait forever, Jay’s Wing.
