We once live in a land of yellow Our village quaint Our fields mellow Our gardens empty of carrots and squash Not a good fate for our farming community The harvest this year was unfortunately lost “Look!” called the neighbor boy, “There is something unusual down by the swamp!” “What could it be? Is it some sort of ploy” “No! No!” yipped the lad, “It’s true, you’ll all see!” He smiled so very gleefully “It's the most strangest thing! You’ll surely agree!” So we all followed the boy with nothing better to do And when we arrived, we saw it was true! “My my, it's a turtle with such a strange hue” It was a color none of us had ever seen! Darker than yellow, with a high contrast This must be the fabled color of green! “Hello,” said the turtle, “Please don’t be alarmed! I’ve heard of the struggles you’ve had with you farms I’m a blessing to you. I’m a plant growing charm!” Well such a surprise this creature had brought The murmurs of townsfolk flooded the air “Is it telling the truth? Do we believe it or not?” “I say we do” chirped the little neighbor boy “Our plants need help and he’s friendly enough. Besides if he’s bad, there’s nothing for him to destroy” The townspeople shrugged, “We’ll give him a shot.” The green turtle smiled “You made a good choice.” Then he walked up the hill with his fast turtle trot And soon we all saw he was telling the truth! Our plants had sprouted up from the ground Brimming with care and vegetable youth We celebrated so joyfully The turtle was praised and given great gifts But the little boy noticed something we didn’t see And though it was faint He squinted at the squashes And saw a splotch of green, much like paint And only a week after the turtle came The little boy was not the only one who saw something strange We all saw our plants were not looking the same The green had spread over our fields, gardens, and yards So we confronted the turtle about the corruption “Turtle what is the meaning of the yellow discard? All our plants are green from your ugly infection!” The turtle replied with tears in his eyes “I don’t understand! I made your plants grow! The green happens naturally just on the side!” “We don’t care!” the townsfolk screamed “You ruined our yellow!” The turtle sobbed from his poor self esteem “I just wanted to help! You all are so mean! If you can’t accept it I’ll just make everything green!” So he squished and he squashed and released all his blue Now colors they say need places to go The blue swirled around changing our land’s hue It mixed with everything that shown as yellow Soon our land was only shades of green And we were all horrified by what we now know And the turtle disappeared or so we are told The little neighbor boy got a glimpse of him one last time That cruel turtle is now the color of gold
