Instructions

Crow silently crept toward the market. It was a cold day, with frosty winds, eternally brushing your skin. It was hard to act out this deed though, as her wooden leg made walking, almost as impossible as being normal. "There she is! The devil girl!" Crow was no normal girl in both appearance and interests. It's not her fault though. She's not even exactly human. Born out of a breeding experiment with devil-like creatures, her biological father was ashamed of her. He had said that the only way for him to love her was for her to do all the chores and to fetch him food. Obviously, it was just a ruse but Crow didn't mind. She was named after the black bird because crows have a superstition that if a crow follows you and caws at you, bad luck and death will follow you like the eye of a hawk. She is not allowed to speak unless spoken so by him. The rumor spread so whenever she tries to talk to someone, they avoid her and cover their ears. It's funny though. She lives in a town on a remote island, where murders and murders of crows visit it almost daily. She found out that crows are actually pretty friendly. When she was around five year old, she had stumbled out of the house accidentally. She got lost but a crow found her. The crow led her back to her house, where her angry father was waiting for her. She had looked for that same crow the next day, only to find that the crow had flown away with its flock. Every day after that, she had talked to the crows, hoping to find the same one. Crow walked to the market. She put her hands in her pockets. She didn't like attention from humans. Birds were much better friends. Her father never loaned her any money so she was obligated to learn how to thieve. She quickly swiped an apple from a stall in one fluid motion. Suddenly but not surprisingly, everyone scattered. The reason was because of a huge ship that came daily to deliver supplies (food, soaps, special ointments, etc). No one in Crow's town would ever leave. But everyone wants to leave. Crow had dreamed of leaving. Leaving her dictator father. Leaving her cruel townmates. Leaving all her worries and fear of being isolated eternal. The only thing that kept her... were the crows. The crows were her dearest friends. That was what kept her on the island. Until one fateful day, when the crows never returned. It was the day when one of the ships plunged into the sea. The day the vessel sunk. Crow decided it was time. When the ship came to port, she sneaked aboard. She remained hidden, feeding off of some stray potatoes and pieces of meat. Suddenly, a beefy hand grabbed her while she was eating some granola. "Well look what we have here? Some little girly who thinks she's mature enough to go on the big boat." His voice was gravelly and deep. She looked at him and gasped. He was only around her height but he had muscles instead of fat, opposing the common stereotype and he looked like he could demolish a tank. "What else did you bring?" He literally picked her up on the scruff of her shirt and sorted through the tiny objects she had brought. Crow also had an interest in flight, aerobic related matters. She began an interest in it when she was a small lass. Because crows fly. She had designed several mechanisms to experiment with the idea. The man looked through them. "What's this?" Crow softly said, "those are flying machines." The man turned his head. "Flying machines?" Crow nodded. "This one..." She took a small little trinket and pressed a few buttons, rotating the wings which allowed the mechanism to hop around a bit. The man's frown slowly turned into a smile. "You may be a wonderful asset..."
