Instructions

To play the xylophone, you can either click on the bars, or press the letter key of the bar you would like to play. Note: For high C, press the space bar.

Description

This project was made for a STEAM course with guidance from Professor Amy Burns. My goal was to create a diatonic xylophone that, when a note was played, would "pop" that note in size and sound the correct pitch. I also wanted the notes to have a timbre similar to a xylophone and be playable at a tempo of 120 bpm. To do this, I followed the process below: 1) In the paint setting, create a sprite of a brown rectangle. I used the color and shading tools to make it slightly two-toned. 2) Use the text tool to add the letter C. 3) Name this sprite "CX" for the pitch C, and xylophone (my original ambitions were to also add a metallophone-sounding option, but this proved tricky. I may try to add it in the future!) 4) Duplicate the "CX" costume and rename it "Big CX." 5) Enlarge the sprite on the second costume. 6) Back on the coding page, add from events "when this sprite clicked." 7) Underneath it, add -"change costume to Big CX" from the Looks options -"set instrument to _____" from the music options (and change from piano to marimba in drop down list) -"play note ___ for ___ beats" from the music options (and choose the middle C from the piano and .25 for the beat) - and "switch costume to CX," once again from the looks options. 8) Duplicate these instructions and change the event from "when clicked" to "when ___ key pressed" and choose C from the drop down menu. 9) Test it! The bar's size should briefly pop while the note plays. 10) Repeat steps 1-9 again for the seven remaining bars/pitches, but make each new sprite slightly smaller than the last to resemble a xylophone. Also, when coding for the high C bar, choose "when space key pressed" instead of the C so they do not sound simultaneously. 11) Rearrange the xylophone bars so they all fit. 12) Using the backgrounds tab in paint, add captions with the text tool. 13) Add the background green square with the shape tool and adjust color and shading to preference. 14) Test for hitches... 15) Publish!
